Anybody else have a factory CD player???
Hello folks,
A question for all of you... I have a '90 IROC-Z w/ 74,000 on it. I've owned it a little over 8 years now. I was looking up some of the production #'s about it, and saw on IROC-Z.com that only 3 were built in '90 with a factory CD player. On my dealer invoice sheet, it says that it has a "digital clock w/ cassette and extended range sound system". I was told by the original owner, that it came with the CD player in it when he bought it for his son brand-new. The CD player doesn't work quite right, but the radio works fine. Anybody else seen/heard any of these before??? Any help would be appreciated.
PS - After this Winter, I'll probably put her up for sale. Anybody interested???

I would say if a factory cd player was limited to only 3 cars in a production year than I would bet it's worth at least a million buxs
SELL IT NOW before we find out the truth

Re: Anybody else have a factory CD player???
usually if it's not on the window sticker for the car, but came with it from the dealer, it's a DIO (dealer installed option) meaning the dealer sent the old radio back to the factory and put in a CD player model and upped the price a bit, 3 may have been made with the CD player from the FACTORY which would tell me it was PROBABLY an "order Only" option. cuz lets face it, back in 1990, it was ALL about the cassette man

I have a 91 T/A 'vert with a factory CD player.... radio works but just like your car the CD part is kinda quirky... it hates CD-Rs and works with regular CDs whenever it pleases. haha
I'm surprised that it's CD only without a tape deck... I'm assuming tapes were still very popular back then? I was born in 91 so I wouldn't know haha

Re: Anybody else have a factory CD player???
Cassettes were still very popular in the late 80`s & early 90`s.CD`s were the new thing back then and I guess thats why so few cars were equipped with the factory cd players.I know a guy who repairs the delco cd players and gives a 1 year warranty if your interested in getting it fixed.Ive used him a few times with several different factory units and his work is top notch

Dont even bother with any of the early factory cd players. Even ones in other late 80s early 90s GMs are prone to malfunction they also cost a fortune to get fixed. Go with a 93 and up deck. The plug didn't change in most GM's until 2004. I have a 2002 pontiac delco deck in my car.

Re: Anybody else have a factory CD player???
That Black unit is one of the very few styles of Delco CD Players that has an Equalizer. I got the same unit from a GMC Typhoon. I really like the MUTE function on these decks, I use it all the time !
Your right about the CD repairs...... Delcos first attempts at a factory CD player were just that - first attempts. The CD player portion inside the head unit can be removed and a more up to date model can be installed making it more reliable and will allow for the use of burned CD most of the time too. For 90-92 there were about 210,000 cars made and only 7800 or so CD players installed in them. Not rally "rare",..... but highly desired by many of those other 200 + thousand owners !
P.S. Look for option code 'UC1' on your RPO tag to see if the CD player was installed athte factory !

so there were liekly very few that actually rolled out of the factory door with such options installed. but that doesnt make them rare :/ i replaced my factory radio with cassette with the factory available option of a 12 disc monsoon player. i think the code for it was UXM1

You are correct in stating that the early gm delco cd players do not work most of the time.Just about every late 80`s - early 90`s cd player Ive pulled from junkyard cars did not work but I know a guy who repairs the cd players and it only costs 100 dollars with a 1 year warranty.I dont think thats too much to spend for originality. This is the unit I have in both of my irocs.Pulled from 92-93 buicks. Both have had the cd units replaced and now work perfectly.I love the stock look of the radio.Funny story,I have quite a few people who ask me if that is a factory cd player to which I reply yes it is.I know they are really asking did the car come from the factory with that unit installed.I always get a kick out that cause it looks like it was there from day 1

Re: Anybody else have a factory CD player???
After looking at the photos I think I do have a original CD player, I purchased a 1990 Camaro for a parts car and the CD player was in it. I had to send it out to have it repaired but now it works great. Had to get the illumin harness from the link below. He has almost any GM radios you might look at the site. Still I don't lije the green buttons. http://www.oem-auto-accessory.com/

Re: Anybody else have a factory CD player???
The original (on the build sheet too) was still in my 91 GTA with some old Crue CD. It refused to play CD-Rs or anything but that Crue CD. One wierd thing I noticed was the CD had to be inserted upside down(label down) or it would error and eject it
Im not sure if that was how they did it or if the CD unit was replaced and installed wrong

Re: Anybody else have a factory CD player???
I had a 1990 olds cutlass back in the day with a factory tape deck and steering wheel controls and for these older cars there still are no adapters to retain the steering wheel controls with an aftermarket deck. I found a cd deck like the one pictured above at a local pawn shop and they wanted about $100 and it had a broken display I asked if I could hook it up to see if it worked and the only thing that worked was the radio but with no display I was kind of searching blind however the steering wheel controls worked, I ended up getting it for $10 and thought hell it can't cost that much to get it fixed. It ended up costing $270 for the repair but my local gm dealer sent this unit in and then they sent back a brand new one.
I will give just one word of advice if you have steering wheel radio controls that is the ONLY reason to get one of these it was brand new and SUCKED as mentioned it would not play cd-r, could not locate stations very good and the sound quality was not any better than a stock deck obviously, but I had steering wheel controls. The thing to remember with these decks is the technology is at least 20 years old back then there was no such thing as cd-r, mp3, ipods, radio text, dvds or video screens which are not easily added, if it is even possible. I'm not trying to bash GM here but all I'm saying is technology has come a long way since then. On a side note I had a digital dash and this radio made my dash real dim but I believe this radio was originally out of a pontiac of some kind as it had orange buttons (but it looked identical to the one pictured in my owners manual) so I'm not gonna blame that on the radio.
So in my opinion the only reason to get one of these and not an aftermarket one is if you have steering wheel controls and want to retain these otherwise in my opinion pioneer and jensen make 1.5 din radios that look nice but neither are my cup of tea. I know these don't look factory but personally I'm not big on the way the factory decks look anyway.
Also if you do want to play cd-r, with mine anyway, if you used the cds with the data side being blue they worked pretty good but the ones that were silver or clear wouldn't play so if anyone has one of these decks try to find the blue cds I haven't seen them in a while but back then they were twice as much you might have to order them online somewhere. Hope this helps somebody.

Re: Anybody else have a factory CD player???
I worked at a GM dealership, they will do NO repairs inside a radio or CD player, They don't send them out for repairs. They just replace them with a refurbished unit.
Re: Anybody else have a factory CD player???
sorry you're right it was a refurbished unit and what the guy at my local dealership told me was it is delco that repairs the radios not gm but you're right they just sent mine in and sent a different one back. He said that's how they handle all radios
