1988 Camaro Hood Hyrdolics

Hi,

My camaro's hood hyrdolics are shot and these cars dont have the standard metal bar to hold it up. Does anyone know where I could find two hyrdolics for it and roughly how much? Thanks for your help

Re: 1988 Camaro Hood Hyrdolics

Bought my car a little over a year ago, had the same problem. Hood would't even think about staying up.
At anyrate, I bought mine from AutoZone. Should be able to get them from any parts store. Think I had them look it up on the computer.
If I remeber correctly they were $30.
Put them on then realized that my car does have a hood prop.
Ohwell nice to have them.

Re: 1988 Camaro Hood Hyrdolics

A while aho when I first bought my 82 z-28 the hood hydrolics got stuck in the up position and i couldnt get the hood down. I ended up removing the entire hood and went with a pin down one I bought from my my buddy. Is that a common thing with the stock hoods? Or was I just trying to close it wrong?

Maybe someone replaced them with ones designed for a steel hood, instead of the fiberglass one. I've seen that before. When I got my 82 Z-28, one side had an original one, and the other had a replacement. The PO didn't know to get one for the glass hood. The pass side now has a big crack in it.

A lot of people don't realize it, but the gas struts for the hood and hatch on our cars are a regularly stocked parts store item and are fairly cheap. They are a normal wear item just like a drive belt, starter or water pump. There is no need to go to a junkyard to buy a used set or to buy them online and pay for shipping.

lol! why didn't you just remove the gas struts and replace them with new ones??? And I've never heard of that happening before. Was your hood steel or composite? All I can think of is that someone put the stronger struts made for the steel hood on your car with a composite hood and you felt the hood flexing before the struts started to compress so you didn't push it any further.

Now that i think about it thats what it mustve been. When I first got it it only had the fiberglass shell hood on it an it did flex an feel like it was breaking so I stopped. I completely forgot til i looked at my old pics of it earlier for comparison to how it is now.

Re: 1988 Camaro Hood Hyrdolics

if you just want the hood to stay up the cheapest is pepboys. they make aftermarket one for the hood and for the rear window. dont want the numbers to show that they are not original, use some paint remover and take the writing off and they are just black.
you can also go to kragens or any cheap parts house.
