loose steering wheel

when i bought my 89 RS two months ago, the guy had already installed a Grant GT steering wheel--a nice new touch to the car i would agree. however, i don't think he screwed it all the way in or tightened it all the way or something because it gradually got looser and looser. right now it sits the way its supposed to but you can like push it upwards and to either side and its not like fixed in place, you know what i mean? i've gotten used to it its really no big deal, but i would like to know what i can do to fix this little situation. where are the screws located that control how tight the steering wheel is or whatever? cuz i looked around and couldnt find anything. do i have to remove the whole dash?

Re: loose steering wheel

U have to dig. But there are 4 bolts for the tilt part of the steering column. 3 are accessible after you dig in there. Search the internet on GM loose steering column. It pretty hard without pics. Use loc-tite.

Re: loose steering wheel

I've got a Grant wheel on one of my Third Gens and my STEERING WHEEL gets loose from time to time as well. In my case, it's because I steer with my knees alot causing the steering wheel to get pushed and pulled. Over time it lossens up as a result.

It's not a loose tilt coulmn problem - but a loose Steering Wheel. All I need to do to stop it from getting loose is to place a lock washer over the stud before tightning down the nut,.......... I've just got to get a Lock washer that's large enough first !

Re: loose steering wheel

I was on vacation when my Grant loosened up. I was forced to borrow a wrench to tighten up the nut. I later found out that some cars were equipped with a Retainer, Strg Whl Nut p/n 6419454. I haven't experienced any problems since throwing this latter on.

Re: loose steering wheel

Yeah, IIRC when I was messing with my column, it had a big lock washer under the steering wheel nut.
