I have power windows and there is no power to them at this time. The driver side window is down and I need to manually move it up so I can transport the car in crappy weather. What is the best way to do this?

 

You can use a jumper wire to a battery. there are only 2 wires 1 pos, 1neg. when you hook them up 1 way is up the other way is down.

 

yea, thats the only way to move them is with a 12 volt source, and as mentioned above, it's as simple as one way is up and one way is down, so hook up a ground and 12V one way, and if it doesn't go anywhere, reverse the wires and do the opposite.

 

and use an inline fuse - you should keep one around - for the hot side - you dont want to burn them out. i think its 20 amp to the windows.

 

i was thinking that as well, but i've done it without so thats why i didn't mention it. Electrically speaking, if you have the resources, a 20 amp fuse (can be removed from the car for the time being), and two female spade crimpable ends, it would be the best to prevent any possible damage.

 

I was able to move them a few inches because the door i needed to move them on was not attached to a car. I did this by levering on one of the gears at the bottom front of the door.

It takes alot of effort, and its not a good way if you plan to move it more than a few inches.

 

Thanks for the info. What do I need as far as a parts list goes? I have never done this sort of thing before I don't know I will need to get the end result. Can I go to Radio Shack and tell Hadji "hey I need a jumper wire" to move my electric windows and he'll know what the hell I need? Where does the 20 amp fuse go inline with the battery and jumper wire?

Go to napa and get a 20-30 foot spool of wire, about 16 gauge should be fine. Get about a foot long piece of wire, attach one end to the battery, the other end install a fuse. If you choose to buy solderless terminals to attatch to the fuse better, than you can. Then cut about another 2 foot piece of wire from the roll. Keep that seperate for now. Go back to the roll, and attatch a solderless terminal on the end and put it on the other end of the fuse. Go to the other end of the roll and attatch that wire to one of the two wires on the power window motor. Now take the little two foot piece and attach it to the other wire on the motor, and ground it out on the body of the car. If the motor doesn't move, that means you need to reverse the wires, and the window should go up.

Looking back, it seems very confusing, and it's right after i took a final, so maybe someone else can explain it better.

 

I use a battery charger. Take two peices of old wire and clip them onto the plus and minus leads of the charger. Then unplug the harness from the motor inside the door. Touch the plus lead wire on either terminal on the motor and the minus on the door shell to make the window go up or down.

The motor is insulated from the door shell you'll need to hookup right at the motor where the harness goes in.

 

All you need is some wire and a 12 volt power source. A battery, a jumper box, a battery charger with enough output to do the job... anything. Skip the fuse you'll just blow it anyway ... you're working in a confined area, the wire may touch ... so what if you get a little spark. If you have an old door harness you can cut the plug off of it and use it. I keep an assortment in my tool box to fit a lot of different cars. It's a 2 minute job ... just do it.
