Replaing the Carpet - Best Choice
Replacing the Carpet - Best Choice
I was wondering if I should replace my carpet - do it right the first time, and pick out one that would look better...Not really worried about the color choice, since I'm thinking black, but what other things would you think about when replacing the carpet? I mean what would be the best quality I suppose?
If you could tell me which sites offer quality interior camaro carpeting, that'd be cool.
I'm currently looking at is Nylon:

Since it's pretty close to me and I wouldn't mind picking it up myself...

What you got on that auction is just the front, not the cargo area, I know I'm gonna buy mine from hawks.. check them out.
http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com
they have a pretty good deal on front and rear carpet set.
It's $259 for both the front and the rear.

Auto Custom Carpets- accmats.com - Got mine from them, perfect fit, molded correctly, only had to cut hole for the seat belts! They cost a little more but are worth it!
Re: Replaing the Carpet - Best Choice
oh geez, yeah they got a huge list of options, but really expensive too...Here is what I'm thinking of buying from them then:
1991 CHEVROLET CAMARO CARPET COMPLETE WITH CONSOLE CUT OUT, 601 BLACK, MASSBACKINGNYLON
If anyone happens to know a promo code for their checkout that'd be great!

Can't say for sure? I know this I ordered a carpet from pace and it sucked, never fit right. I spoke w/ a friend who restores old muscle and some later models, third gens included. He says ACC is the only place he'll use, he says he has tried alot of places and thinks their's are best. I honestly believe that you get what you pay for. It's not up to me to tell anyone where they should spend their $. I can only say where and why I spent mine. good luck...

Look up Jim85Iroc he is a moderator here, He owns Iracemotorsports.com, Do a search it will come up, I bought new carpet from him awhile ago, I want to say over two years ago, And it still looks like the day I put it in.
You might pay alittle more than on ebay or something but definatly worth it.

I got my ACC carpet through stockinteriors. Fit is good. Had to trim the edges and put in all the holes but it does look good.

Re: Replaing the Carpet - Best Choice
Just out of curiousity, how many people have used Dynamat or Hushmat on the floor when replacing their carpet? I am getting ready to order new carpet for my 89 RS and am trying to decide between using the jute padding or one of the sound deadener products. And if not too much to ask how much did it take to cover the floor.
Thanks in advance,
David

Re: Replaing the Carpet - Best Choice
I have never used those products, but you will need something here and there to make the carpet fit properly. The best thing to do is take the carpet out of the box and let it sit in the sun and let all the wrinkles work out. place it in the car and do your best to work it into where it goes on the floor pan. You will see places where it is loose or not making contact with the floor, use your jute padding to fill those voids. If you can afford it, you can replace all the padding with fresh stuff, though i have never done that. I think the hardest thing is cutting the holes for the seatbelts, seats, etc. Take your time. Dont just pull the carpet out of the box and toss it in, it will look it.

Personally I'm just gonna stick with the mass backing.

Jute padding is that padding that came stock underneath our carpet. It's made from cloth and cotton fibers.
Came already attached to mine.

Re: Replaing the Carpet - Best Choice
I have alot of experience working w/dynamat. While it is expensive, it is VERY good at keeping down the road noise. It also cuts down on interior rattles a TON. When it comes time to pull my interior apart I will be using it on the RS under the carpeting to improve my sound quality/deadening. Just remember when using dynamat a heat gun and a 2" roller are your friends, dont be afraid to use them.

You can probably order it without the padding if you'd like but I believe that it comes attached to the aftermarket carpet by default.

Re: Replaing the Carpet - Best Choice
Mine came with the padding attached. Which was good because the old padding was stuck half to the carpet and half to the floor. The ACC carpet had the exact same padding as the original.

also goes in doors, behind plastic panels and other misc. areas for enhanced rattle/squeek deterance.
Re: Replaing the Carpet - Best Choice
So I should probably go with the 1/4" thickness, but would (1) 32"x 54" x 1/4" (813mm x 1372mm x 6.35mm) Dynaliner Sheet be enough to cover the entire floor?

One thing about the comment made here about planning to add some padding no matter what. I agree with that. I've re-carpeted a few of my cars... and have bought car carpets from one or two other places. ALL aftermarket carpet is going to need a little 'boost' in the padding, get some 1/2" at a fabric store or carpet store.
Re: Replaing the Carpet - Best Choice
Currently i have dynomat covering just my rear wheel wells and it does work awesome. It comes in sheets and can be cut to fit wherever you need to place it. Originally the shop I purchased them from was asking $35 per sheet but i worked them down to 20 a sheet. however the stuff does weigh quite a bit for being small, so if your looking at making a strip car you may want to think twice, at least about lining the whole car. Hope this helps a little bit.

Just figured I'd post this here:

If someone could just verify that I only need one box to do the Camaro floor, I'd like to put in the order!

Mine fit well everywhere, had to trim @ rocker edges only, asposted earlier, it's best to pu;;it out , layit out and let it relax for a day before installing....

Re: Replaing the Carpet - Best Choice
i got my carpet from acc and its the same stuff that hawks sells.
but when i took the oem carpet out - i have owned the car since it was new in 90 - i found it had a very heavy rubber padding, which the replacement did not have. it was very nice, too bad it was 19 years old.
the funny thing is i bought new carpet in a darker grey and when i took off the rocker panels to start pulling it - IT WAS THE SAME COLOR AS MY REPLACEMENT CARPET. it had actually become a very light grey, instead of the dark grey the car came with.
but i am having a hell of a time fitting it. a pull here, a tug there, then back and forth. should take a good day to do it all and have it right. also took part of the dash off to replace lots of things there too, so its a major project.
right now its sitting in the car, with the cut outs for the center and im waiting for it to fall into place. give it a day and it should be back into its correct position.
