Do most 3rd gens sound like junk inside!

I recently started driving the ROC to work and without my radio working i can hear every sound my car makes. I keep hearing a loud "clunking" sound like if its coming from the back hatch when i drive on bumpy roads. It also sounds like the passenger door glass is rattling and/or my door is not shut right,, which it is!

I know my suspension is stiff but its annoying the hell out of me!!! anyone else have a similiar problem?? is there a way to fix it?

Re: Do most 3rd gens sound like junk inside!

It's not impossible, but very hard to make a thirdgen quiet. Cheap construction, combined with years of use and wear, can do that to a car. Someone on here made a nice write-up and I think it's a sticky now on how to fix some annoying door rattles. For the noise in the hatch area, check to make sure the spare tire and jack are secure. You may also have to adjust the rear hatch latch and the little plastic bumpers for it to make it stop.

Mines fairly loud. Lowering springs, poly bushings, lowpro tires all contribute to a rough ride.

Im putting Dynamat under my carpet this year to try to quiet it down

My own experience. the jack and spare in the rear hatch tend to be loose.. The doors are heavy and tend to sag a little bit. You may try to put new pins and bushings. Like IrocZ said though...check the sticky

Haha, mine does. Everytime I drive on a road with sand or rocks all I can hear is all that crap slapping against my wheel wells. And I need weather stripping badly lol.

Re: Do most 3rd gens sound like junk inside!

Its the nature of the beast. My last IROC (1989) rattled and squeeked to high heaven--anytime I went over rough pavement I thought the thing was going to fall apart.
My current IROC (1988) doesnt seem to have that same problem--its alot more sound (not sure why). Ive heard subframe connectors will help, dynamat will help and going thru your car and tightening up every nut and screw can help too...Of course getting a radio back in the car may be the cheapest and easiest "fix"!! LOL!!

On my 92, One side of my rear hatch bracket is busted, needs to be welded back down and it causes rattle. I was always going to stick foam inbetween any parts in the interior to make the dash rattle go away but haven't got to it yet.

My 89 IROC used to rattle like crazy. It was a vert too which I'm sure didn't help. My 92 RS was good. Now my 87 IROC is good as well since the previous owner restored her well. No rattles here.

That is a really loaded question. There is no easy answer, but everyone is right so far. New pins and bushings in your passenger door will probably help the most, but new weatherstripping will go a long way also.

The only real rattling I get is when I have my subs pounding thats cause the rear headliner plastic is broken.

Other than the god awful sound my throw out bearing makes my car is quiet. Though if I am going over speed bumps or backing out of a uneven drive way my car makes horrible squeaking and borderline metal twisting sounds right at the driverside LCA.

Do you have T-Tops? From what Ive heard subframe connectors can make a huge difference in stiffening up the body and reducing the amount of body flexing (and squeeking) you are hearing.

Sub Frame conectors! Afterwards nut and bolt the car front to rear ( Tighten everything) It'll help immensely....

Re: Do most 3rd gens sound like junk inside!

Honestly, neither of my 3rdGens has been a rattle-trap. I get a little suspension noise in my current Formula, but that's because my struts are toast. I had an annoying "clink" sound that turned out to be the spare-tire/retainer. It's no Buick, but I have no serious complaints all things considered...

I'm going to have the RS interior floor LineXed (bedliner) after the subframe connectors are installed. My old 89 iroc l98 used to rattle and squeek from everywhere, whole interior was loose, dash, rear panels, door glass and hinges.

Re: Do most 3rd gens sound like junk inside!

My LT supposed to be quiet but I still get some windnoise and other sounds. I agree with the other posts where the jack can sometimes get loose. I am too going to throw in some Dynamat when I get some more money.

Re: Do most 3rd gens sound like junk inside!

My 88 GTA is actually pretty quiet. The only places I get a little rattle from now are the doors, and the seats used to squeak before I greased them up.

Thanx for all the replys. I thought it was just my car! Now i know its a common thing. Yeah cant wait for my radio,, it helps alot when i pump the volume up. Im going to go thru the whole interior and check for loose bolts..parts..etc. And for those who asked my car is a hard top.

Re: Do most 3rd gens sound like junk inside!

i removed my spare tire and jack.
my conclusion was that the tire was 20 years old, and the air tank to fill the tire was just as old and not likely to be any good anyway.
a lot of noise went away.

my hatch makes a lot of noise and it sounds like i have a toolbox in my trunk rattling around, but other than that, if the road is smooth, its a great car.

Re: Do most 3rd gens sound like junk inside!

I was totally surprised when i picked up my 88 IROC last week that the cars interior was very quiet not rattles or squeeks at all and it has T-Tops. It is most likely due to it only having 76K and as my 3rd car i cant see it racking up too many miles soon! By the way i just signed up today hello all!
