Fast Repair of Loose Steering Column

Well my steering column was getting more and more loose by the week and I had suggestions here on how to tighten it up, but I really didn't want to deal with getting the special tools and all that. So I took it to Empire Steering Column in Rialto CA, was a half hour drive and took Angelo about half hour to get it all tight again, they specialize in steering columns and they were recommended by another member on here a while back. Cost $80. Later.

Yeah...I had mine done for $100.

They said there was only ONE of the 4 bolts still in place, and it was only in by a few threads!

Yeah i did mine myself.

Took a grand total of EIGHT hours. Took it apart and put it back together THREE times. The parts were a pain, and i had to helicoil all four bolts.

I will never do that myself again.

Re: Fast Repair of Loose Steering Column

Ended up replacing the column housing (mine was an 87 column) with one off of a 90 GTA, a much beefier unit. Took all of my innards and put them in the gta column, mine was so bad the column itself had broken apart. I felt it let loose when I had to jam the brakes at speed. Friggin scary man. The repair took 8-9 hrs. Not including getting the junkyard column. Had the help of a friend whose done a couple! Don't think I could of done it alone? What a pain...

Small town (Bertram, TX) local shop, which is now closed. Maybe they weren't charging enough for repairs, to pay the bills?

You went to a stealership.....That was your first mistake!

Ever since then, I no longer use my steering wheel as "leverage" to get in or out of my car. It wasn't loose when I bought the GTA 2 years earlier.
