Re: can i put an old style steering column in my 91 firebird?
I have an 89 and after somone tried to hotwire it I replaced the column from I think it was from an 90 camaro.
So I'm not sure about the airbag, but this is my experiance with the vats.
I didn't get the steering wheel as well I like the firebird one over the camaro one. I had to put my key cylinder into the column so the VATS resistor matched my car and I didn't have to have a key made with the "new" cylindar cut and the car VATS. I'm not 100% sure that it is a direct replacement but as long as you move your VATS items over from the old column it should work for the VATS. If the wireing is different you should be able to move your components over to the new column.
Now the legal/safety questions come into play. I don't think its legal in most states to remove the driver side air bag if the car was orginally equiped with one. So you would need to keep the airbag steering wheel, and move the airbag items over to the "new" column.
Why do you want to lose the tilt? If its loose you can take it apart and tighten it up "use blue lock-tite". I know there is a tech article on the site on how to do this.
Also make sure you know what you are doing with the airbag so you don't deploy it as it can hurt you and they are expensive.

The air bag is going to go no matter what. I dont need all the crap, just want to get rid of all the vats and airbag and everything. This is a purpose built car, and i would like to get rid of all this. As far as the tilt goes i have a cage to crawl over and alot of time i use the wheel to pull on and on my other cars i have had problems. I have the column and everything from a 85 so might as well use it. As far as legal..........that will be the least of my problems if i get stoped, lol.

are you still running the computer or have you switched over to carb.
If you still have the computer and want to get rid of the vats you can use a multimeter and get the resistance of the key and then get a matchng resistor and put it in line and that will provide the same effect.
I'm not sure about the signal harness, if it will plug in or not.

everything is gone computer wise. Its pretty much a full interior race car. I just hate to get it tore apart and find that they plug different, if so i am going to get rid of the air bag and just keep the column.

your best bet is to look at the connectors on both and see if they colors and pin locations match up. You might not get a perfect answer for the exact years you are working with unless you do some researching yourself. I know I had to do some modifications to use my 84 column with a 91 dash harness. I don't remember the specifics though.
