Hey guys, I know some of our cars came from the factory with the rear plastic trim having carpeted inserts. This includes the L&R sail panels and the elec pull down cover. The rear glove box also had carpet on it.

I was wondering who has / or have done this to their car? I was thinking about getting some matching ACC carpet and doing the rear of my car.

Here's my dilemma....the rear panels have a hard curve to them and ACC carpet has a stiff plastic backing that can be heated and shaped (hence the molded carpet). But how difficult would this be? I wonder if you can buy ACC carpet with a different backing? Something a little flexible?

Anyone done this yet?

Does anyone have pictures of the factory carpet installed on the rear plastics?

Thanks, I just found it. My only problem would be getting a match to my graphite carpet I purchased from ACC / A1 auto. I may do some research and see what I can turn up.

I cut a piece of my ACC carpet material a few minutes ago, after heating it with a heat gun I was able to make it conform to the shape of a dowel rod.

So I'm confident enough that I can heat the back of carpet to make it conform to the shape of the wheel well plastic.

When I get around to it, I'll post pics.

Good news, I just talked to Candi at ACC and she said they offer the same carpet in std colors with a latex backing.

She said it is way easier to work with and sending me a sample.

 

I posted a name of a lady at ACC a few months ago that was part of making the floor mats with the contour to them. She said that they are willing to create the contoured rear carpet sets if someone is willing to let them use their car or send them the original carpets. Do a search for ACC and my name and you might find the post. It was made in late Februaury or early March. This way you can get a set already formed for proper fitment.

 

I've got some junk sail panels I could send them....just didn't want to wait 6 months to a year to get them.

 

Any updates ? Did you ever receive samples?

Yep, got the sample. I just haven't had time to mess with my car lately because I just started back to school (and working full time).

The backing is a lot more flexible than the plastic backing, but it's not "stretchable" I think it'll conform to the panels pretty decent.

I may try to work on this during august interim in a few months.

 

Instead of the carpet I went with high end vinyl that produced a leather look for the insets...

The Hampton vinyl stretched just fine, though I don't think the none fuzzy backing held as good as my original panels done in Naugasoft vinyl from an household upolstry shop. The fuzzy looped back held the glue better and the naugasoft was more stretchable. They did not carry a red that would match my new seats though.




Just a thought in case the carpet does not work like you wanted!

 

I also saw a gray tweed on here someone did that looked really good... Do a search... I almost went that route & the Vinyl, but I couldn't get it to match my beechwood carpet.. so dying it with SEM...

Im working on something similar to this in my car too. Rather than use carpet, I used an urban gray variant of US Army digital camo. Did the dashboard, all the recessed areas in the trunk compartment, the kick panels, headliner, and the gray cloth portion of the door panels.

The car is in the middle of a major overhaul so none of the panels are installed yet, but I put a pic of one for example of how it looks.

I put a small pic showing a graphical example of the custom nose emblem im putting on the front too. I know its off topic, but I never miss a chance to display it since Im extremely happy with how it turned out.

BTW Redraif, that red vinyl in your panels looks SUPER!

 

The black Hampton Vinyl I got from a High end fabric store. The kind you would get fabric for drapes and recovering furniture. I had to look at samples and order it. It was the least cheap looking I could find with UV protection. Its a matte finish with a leather look to it. I held up some leather samples to it and it was darn close to a textured leather. Its not cheap though. I want to say 30+ a yard and that was back in 2000. All total with the doors and back I think I invested $100.00.

The red I got from the same guy who did my seats. I'm not sure what the vinyl is called. Check with Hawks. I got the seats through him and ordered extra red for the back section and doors.

 

Be interested to see how it all look when you are done. Only thing I would watch out for with the dash... The lighter colors in the fabric will cause a glare to reflect up on the windshield. Light colors have been known to actually cause blind spots. The did a show on it we watched in school. They researched all the colors of dashes and Matte balck was the best to use so you could clearly see. The tan dash they had causes such a blind spot you could not see the test object that had put in front of the car in the test. You might have to cover it with some loose black fabric when you drive. Just a quick check it before you drive it warning for you.

I like that Emblem. Who are you having make it up for you?

 

3M Super Adhesive spray or something like that works well for gluing it down. Also used that stuff on headliners and non-molded carpet. Held well for 10 years on my T/A.

 

I always use the expensive 3m... think super90. $10+ at Home Depot... the money is worth not redoing it though! The rest just lets go with the heat and cold... I also used some contact cement for the hard to spray areas...

 

Do a Google search for "Ultra Leather", many places sell it and it's the same thing as the Hampton vinyl.

 

I took it for a ride to the parts store with the dash in to look for some trim to line the opening around the big defroster vent, and I didnt notice any glare on the glass. The colors on it are all pretty subdued, the lightest gray being pretty dark. Its also fabric so it doesnt reflect light much. Good thing because I never even thought about glare, would have been a kicker to get it all done just to not be able to see out my windshield. That would be my luck too. The dash was actually one of the first pieces I did since it was splintered pretty bad on one corner.

The nose emblem Im making myself with a transparent decal, a nice shiny sheet of foil, a complete Fiero emblem, and some clear sealer. If all goes well it should look similar to a GTA emblem, with chrome instead of gold.

 

I know the fiero emblems well. I can't wait to see the completed emblem. Might have to hire u to make something up for me.

red is very kool. but i used carpet on mine and did not like it so i pulled it out. going to pull all the carpet from the back so i can cut an access plate for the fuel pump. i an trying to get some fake leather in the same color as the leather and fake leather seats from a 2002 f/b and will try that. anyway i need if to make the door panels match everything.

 

Long story short... About the car. Basically since March of 2006 the car has been in pieces. What started out as a repair for a cracked head turned in to an overhaul of massive proportions. In the end there was paint being laid in the engine bay that failed 2x. Once was bad paint the next was bad lighting. So I have to get a pro to fix what an amatuer did. (bad paint and some messed up welds) Now I'm waiting on a painter and the money to get it done. I had 2, but the economy forced them to move. Then comes the hard part. I have no brake or fuel lines... They all have to be remade. All the wiring for the enigine is half way rerouted, but I'm not sure how and where it all was going... I was not the one doing this part of the work... I was porting the new heads and intake runners at the time...

My personal life ate up my time too... I moved, got hitched so to speak, and got laid off 4x thanks to our lovely economy!

So time has been short and w/o the car it gets a bit depressing to post alot.

 

you did great on your job. that is the way it always works. mine looked ok but now i have taken so many things off, put others on, did not like them and took them off again.
like i said - i hated the carpet in the rear. i still work on cars so my daily driver will be hauling parts and i did not want to screw up the carpet. so this weekend i went to a cloth store, where women go to buy things to make dresses, etc. i picked up some black fake leather, measured it and tomorrow i will go back to that store and have them cut it with a very big cutter. just the long straight cuts. costs on the net from car places - 65 or 70 plus shipping.
COST AT YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD STORE - 2 YARDS BY 54 INCHES - 15.00.
i still need the padding - some type of heat shield. the black leather will be put in with snap buttons - black. that way if i carry something nasty - i will just unsnap that part where the well is and put it there and not worry about damaging anything.
additionally i will just be able to do that all the way to the rear seat, which allow me to get into the top of the gas tank where the fuel pump it. bilt a jig for a 1/8 alunimum piece to fit under the metal and a larger but 1/8 piece to make up the door. so undoing a few plugs gets me to the fuel pump.
it was only going to be a small cleanup, been buying and installing for almost a year.
new suspension, lots of engine parts.
i am a big fan of what you did. you never gave up.

I have shopped at the fabric stores quite a bit (JoAnnes and Hancock). Only issues I have come up with is in recent years teh inventory has gone way downhill. They don't stock many of the colors or finishes they used to. I was trying to make a shift boot for my fiero and had a heck of a time finding some vinyl that did not look like it was shiney plastic. The only matte type finishes they stocked were too thick and stiff to work for a boot. I finally found some at a JoAnnes that was closing down. If you want the basic colors you can save a ton on Headliner material as well. Though even they have figured out we know what a good deal it is and the prices have slowly climbed there too.

 

i went to rave and they have a good looking product too but the problem is price. 27.00 a yard - 54.00 plus shipping and a wait, for 2 yards, each cut in one yard X 54 inches, and the local cloth store, 15.00 for two yards, cut in one long length to match my needs with no seam, and no shipping.
to go with one piece from the very back to, and then under the rear seat, is more than 54 inches so i wanted the longer part, and it can be gotten local.
and if you know what lengths to buy, they will do the cut on a very nice big table with a very sharp blade that always cuts clean and always at 90 degrees to the other side.
my problem is finding the darn snaps and padding. i think i will go with a thin rubber matting.
some parts can be attached with velcro. like the kick panels by your feet, or the panels where the hanger screws attach. i dont want the screws so velcro will do it for me in those parts.
and since the leather is cheap by any standard you can buy enough to redo the entire car and just save it.

 

They also have the snaps you are looking for, and when you order vinyl and cloth from them it is not cut into different pieces, it's all 1 piece if you order 3 yards you get 1 piece not 3 1yard peices.
You might try looking at landau top foam for padding.
