Dash Buld replacement in a 91 RS

HI

I have a 91RS all my dash lights are out (went one by one) I went to GM to ask about replacement and was told i would have to buy a whole new cluster from them for $600 plus labor....So i went to Canadian Tire got the 6 bulbs and a haynes manual for the car. Unfortunately the "how to" is not for my dash but a earlier one i think. does any have idiot prove way and steps to helping me see again at night.

thanks

I replaced all my bulbs in my 92 about 6 months ago bought the bulbs from gm cost me around 120. Now I just started working part time at Oreillys Auto Parts and they carry the bulbs complete with the socket not sure how much but they come as a pair i can get you a price in a day or two. The guy at the gm dealer you went to is full of bs

Re: Dash Buld replacement in a 91 RS

I did my lights in my dash ~10 years ago (I have a 91 RS w/6cyl). I had the same problem they kept going out one by one, till I couldnt see how fast I was going anymore...

The person who said replace the full dash cluster was full of BS. I got my lights at the local parts store, I dont remember the bulb # off hand (maybe I can find my receipt) but i think they were some special halogen mini bulb...$10 a piece if I remember right (unless I am confusing these with the rear 3rd brake light bulbs, its kind of fuzzy)

What I remember I had to do was take off the lower cover under the drivers side that is above your legs, take off the plastic trim (it just snapped out) unbolt the steering column to get some more room to get the gage cluster out, (theres like 2 bolts i think) tilt the steering wheel down all the way, take off the top dash pad (to make room to slip out the gage cluster between the steering whell, it was a very tight fit to get it out)

For some reason I think I remember I had to take off the clear cover off of the gage cluster and then peel off my gage cluster facia, (I mean the stickers that have the MPH, and RPM to access the screws underneath to open it up to physically get to the lights that are inside.

all told, I remember spending about 4 hours on this little project. (with a few beers)

You wont have to remaove the gauge faces on the 90-92 models. Remove the black plastic bezel and the headlight switch ****, then you can access all the screws that hold the gauge cluster in. The bulbs are in the back of the cluster.

Since your car is a 1991 RS, you should have the electronic cluster. It's simply a matter of removing the gauge bezel (two screws) and the cluster (4 screws). You can tilt the steering wheel all the way down or pull it the steering wheel to make it easier to pull the cluster out. The bulbs simply screw in to the back of the cluster. You can buy the bulbs from a local parts store or the dealer. You shouldn't spend anymore than $10 to replace them all. If your tech savvy, this job shouldn't take you anymore than 2 hours. Oddly enough, the bulbs are attached to the sockets. Be sure you buy the same style bulbs.

The only probelm with removing the bulbs from the sockets at least for me was mine were like soldered in the socket. When i took the bulb out of some of the sockets the metal tabs in the socket broke. Therefore when i put the new ones in some of them did not work and thats why i went to the dealer on them.

Right... the bulbs are actually attached to the sockets. They are a specialty bulb, therefore the new bulbs you buy are also attached to sockets. The dealer would be the best place to get replacements. However, and local parts store should stock them as well.
