Removed my headliner, I think I broke the center light, I was not sure how to remove it and well I just yanked it out. Took my headliner to get redone. I need some serious input. Tell me what you think about the amount that I paid. $143.00, that includes 8.00 tax, I live in California. Just redone in regular Black fabric nothing special. Headliner itself was in good condition. I plan on picking it up today. I was wondering if someone could help me with the removal/installation of that center light. That seems to be my only problem. It had two little aluminum stubs/rivets holding the light assembly to the roof, so I yanked the plastic assembly thing off to remove the headliner. Thanks

 

The light he held on with "speed nuts" that are spun onto the little alum posts. If you lost those you might be able to find replacements. Normally I just grab them with pliers and spin.

 

They are available in the HELP! section at most auto parts retailers (ie Autozone/Advance) - they come in a package with several different sizes, but you only need the two little ones. They look like a small, thin flimsy washer with cuts in the center hole. Just put the light in, and push these on those rivet looking studs you described.

 

i just did the same thing on my 85' Z28. pulled the headliner and took it to get re-done. all new foam backing, and new black fabric. it looks like new! they charged me 85bucks cash. i was able to just get ahold of the little speed nut washers with my needle nose pliars and wiggle them while pullling down on them, and they came right off (regarding dome light question)

Consider it costs about $40 in materials at most.

The padding/foam is attached to the material from the manufacturer, so of course it will be changed.

Yanking on interior parts to remove them usually results in a less than desirable outcome.

Did you break the 3 clips in the front above the windsheild or are they still in the roof? You can use a good velcro to keep the front of the headliner up.

 

I saw in some post where you guys are fiberglassing or resining the headliners for more strength. Are you doing the underside or the fabric side? I want to do mine this weekend and havent found the answer yet.

 

Yeah I too am interested in a little more strength for my headliner, I was thinking of adding some Dynamat sound absorbing material, but the guys who redid it advised me against it, due to weight. And yes, I broke those little clips, So... How much velcro should I use???

 

I tried using little velcro squares.... they made me wanna kick a baby. so just dont use that.. use like a big roll or something. cause lil squares dont cut it... OH and word to the wise.. if you try putting your headliner up with the can of sticky spray for 6 bucks at autozone... dont. maybe try the 11 dollar can instead. I was cheap and it diddnt work out for me. I plan on buying the 11 dollar can and trying again.

 

the more expensive stuff is worth it.. dont mess around and be cheap... it dosent pay to be cheap I guess. also.... why diddnt you guys just put new fabric on yourselves? it cost me 25 bucks at walmart and my headliner looks great... ok ok i guess it pays to be cheap sometimes... especially when your a college student. :P

Whatever happend to that picture? Any more thoughts on the the foam backing? I am considering buying some double sided aluminum foam, the thin kind. Then taking it to get to get glued to the back of my headliner. This is important to me as I want to quiet (hush hush) up my interior and keep some heat out. Thanks. I am considering a dome light with the map lights since I broke the original. Any photos of that domelight in your car?

 

Yeah, yeah, show us the pics of the headliner! I need to redo my headliner cuz it has begun to sag and will probably do this myself. I had the headliner done about six years ago but prefer to do it myself.

 

Yeah pics would be nice. I have t tops and mine is bent all around. I have considered the fiberglass resin but not sure. I have redone 2 headliners myself. They both looked beautiful until a few weeks later and then the foam separated and fell. I thought I got them scraped and I thought I used the good stuff but obviously not.

 

i did mine myself also, isnt the best in the world, some of the edges wouldnt stretch right, but its good for now... better than the saggy fabrick lol

Sixseries, get some dynamat or a similar product and apply it to the under side of the roof it's self while the liner id out. It'll be even more effective since it'll help dampen any rattling of the roof skin. Most noise in a poorly insulated car comes from the expanses of mostly flat sheet metal oscilating like a drum head or speaker cone, the mat will help control this.

I was thinking about the resin thing also, I was going to do both sides for the most stregnth, the inside most definitely to provide a nice surface for the adhesive. I'm thinking I should do the inside surface while it's still in the car to "lovk" the liner in it's proper shape. I'm afraid if I do it on a table it'll distort and not fit right.

I bought a sound insulator with double sided aluminum. Non adhesive backing to be glued to my headliner. Where are all the photos?

i paid 14 bucks for everything, no visors though, i got them but deleted them for now. I used synthetic fur, haha,, its the Mexican-American in me, NO? ill post a pic, I got what i paid for. But hey better than having a flapping headliner, and getting sour looks.. I fiberglassed it with cloth and resin, very sturdy, like resurrecting the past

i paid 30 for everything, fabric was 20 and the permatex spray was 10

 

i had a hard time stretching the material , and the glue was very strong

 

fur for now, then im going to pickup a carbon fiber head liner when that dude on this forum comes out with one. I think the fur belongs to the ghetto list, but honestly it looks pretty decent, not original but decent, ladies cant stop touching it.

i just did one of mine last weekend. the backboard was falling to pieces...especially around the seat belts. i fiberglassed that area on both sides (board and left & right) and a few other spots. used 3M super adhesive spray glue that i had laying around for a few years. cost me $32.00 including the fiberglass supplies. just did the headliner. looks great.

Anyone try anything besides velcro for the broken front clips? mine sags down. I covered mine in light vinyl material from wal-mart. Used 3M headliner adhesive- 10 bucks or so. Fabric was about 6 bucks. But the headliner was so brittle I didn't really stretch it or anything, just wanted something in the car. Looks like a 6/10 but was under $20.

I was thinking of those snap buttons they use on jackets and stuff.... or finding replacement clips.

 

hot glue, but if it brittle you'll see the hot glue marks you might want to try the adhesive again, this time use a blow dryer if that dont work, try a 3m tape. that adhesive spray isnt designed to go on cold in cold weather, run the can under the sink if warm water, heat it up, shake, spray a lot and blowdry

 

Hah, we took one of our broken clips to NAPA and said.. "Could we buy a pack of these?", so they went on their computers, and a week later we had a bag of brand new GM clips. They only cost us about 5 bucks, we got our headliner professionaly installed though, 80 bucks for the labor. Not too bad, and it only took him an hour. Came out great.
