4th gen steering wheel

I've read in a sticky here that 4th gen steering wheels are a direct bolt on for our cars, and I like the look and feel of them much better so I want to do that.

However, what about the airbag? My car is an '88 so I don't have them, but is putting an airbag equiped steering wheel in my car an idea I should be smacked upside the head for? Or is there no chance of it going off without the electrical connections hooked up?

Re: 4th gen steering wheel

That wasn't a very nice way to put it... lol.

I was under the impression that sensors set off the air bag, am I right? What exactly is going to deploy it if those are not connected?

I just want a straight answer on that? That's why I asked this question instead of just doing it. If someone can show me its a dumb idea, obviously I won't do it. (Beyond just assumptions.. Challenge those! Lol)

Thanks for the quick reply though.

Had it not been for that particular part of the post, I wouldn't have responded at all, so you opened yourself up for it!

If was unplugged, I see no reason for it to ever just suddenly go off. I'd just wrap up the end of the plug, to eliminate any possible thing of possibly causing it to fire.

Re: 4th gen steering wheel

Static electricity could set it off, at least that's what I heard back in school. Do what Stephen said wrap the end of the connector.

There's a lot of other steering wheels out there that look better than one with an airbag. Grant steering wheels are a great steering wheel to have and they have some around the $40 range.

Re: 4th gen steering wheel

What I like about the 4th gen wheel is it has a "stock" feel to it, that's what I like. I like mod's that wouldn't be obvious to someone who doesn't own a 3rd gen (The drivetrain doesn't apply to that rule -at all- )

Thanks for the replies guys, I'd rather be smacked upside the head by the whole 3rd gen community than get my face smashed in by an airbag at random , that's why I asked this question.

Purplehaze, what do you mean by a "cap"? Like a way of disabling/containing the airbag in the event it does go off? Or am I completely misunderstanding you?

Re: 4th gen steering wheel

Like a false airbag, just the cover.. I tried to do it with the 90-92 air bag but couldn't get it right, the vinyl needs to be stretched out. I think I'm going to shape a piece of wood and staple it to that. (I'm paranoid and don't trust the first airbags)
