SPEEDO SWAP! HELP!

Hey guys, Yes, I did a search, but did not come up with the specific results I was looking for.

I have an 86 IROC-Z with the 85mph cluster, switching to the 115mph. BUT NOT THE WHOLE CLUSTER, just the speedo itself (picked up a brand spanking new one on eBay.

My question is, how do I go replacing JUST the speedo face, the tech article just shows how to remove the entire cluster..

I have the bezels unscrewed and everything, what do I do now?

Thanks!!

Re: SPEEDO SWAP! HELP!

Cable drive speedo with two screws holding it in from the back. Remove cluster.

Your best bet is to swap the entire speedo head, not just the face plate. With a plastic speedo needle, which is 20+ years old, you won't have much of a chance to remove it without breaking it or bending the small metal piece that it attaches to.

Re: SPEEDO SWAP! HELP!

I have the whole head, with mileage roll, needle, & trip odometer. Sorry, I probably should've made that clear, my bad. pfft details

Damn, I guess what I was REALLY looking for was a way to do this swap without removing the cluster, (less chance of me screwing up something important)

Would I really need to recalibrate with just the speedo head?

Thanks for the input guys!

Re: SPEEDO SWAP! HELP!

I was wondering if..I removed the 85mph face plate, to give me access to the mechanical stuff, if i could unplug the cable from there, then just plug in the new head, thus avoiding the removal of the whole cluster...if this is making any sense..

...or just bring it to my mechanic. lol and let him deal with it

Removing the cluster is a half an hour job--and you won't break, mangle, or destroy anything. Since the trip odometer is probably kaput and since the following link provides some useful info on cluster removal, you might give it a look-see:

Im going to assume, since it's a NOS odometer on the new head (0 miles and everyting) that the new trip odometer works, (not that I especially need it) and Im glad you popped into the thread, since you're a dash-removal guru

...it doesn't help that i cant drop my left dash panel due to wrong socket size one one of the screws there, so it won't come out...which is another reason Im looking for an alternative way.

Nice thread though, my 85mph trip odometer doesnt work, so maybe when it's pulled out, I can fix the trip odom. and sell it

Also, One more thing, from reading your thread, all I have do do is remove the speedo cable, not the wiring harnesses I see in there?

(sorry for being the resident idiot when it comes to these things
