I have the grey interior and some black pieces in my 91 z28 and i want it to have all black.. What paint should I use for it and what should I do to prep it? Thanks

i used semi gloss rustolium semigloss plastic paint and had way better luck with that than i usualy do with krylon and its holding up really well and looks good too to prep it all i did was get some red scotchbrite pads and very lightly did a once over to kinda scuff up the surface just barely though and then wiped it all down with isopropyl alcohol and painted with very light coats

Best bet...Use Krylon Fusion. That stuff sticks to anything, and no primer needed. It doesn't flake off. Just make sure you clean your pieces first. Dishwashing liquid with grease cutter works well.
If you use any other paint, you need to use a product like Bulldog so it will stick.

well i have painted most of the pieces using both Krylon and the rustolieum and yeah both suck haha... it might have to do with the fact that it was really cold out, but i cleaned the pieces and im still getting some flake. it pisses me off

yeah painting interior pieces does suck. mostly cause it will fade away and bring back the other ugly color. best way to change the color is to dye it. painting is garbage. i mean, painting a black panel black again aint bad. but when it gets hot in the car your paint will get sticky and it will peel off over time. screw it. buy black interior pieces or dye them.

Just curious...did you use the Krylon Fusion paint, or just regular Krylon? I used the Fusion on some interior parts and haven't had a problem at all.

This is what I used and had really good luck. Been a year and no problems at all. Cleaned with alcohol, let them dry, sprayed the primer then the dye. Very easy.

Just re-did mine from the grey interior to black. Using krylon fusion. I just washed the pieces off to get rid of dust dirt grease oil or other contaminents, turned out very well. I reccomend the krylon fusion.

The Krylon Fusion is fine until something touches the panel. Then it scratches and flakes off really easily. I do not recommend the product for this reason. Some kind of plastic/vinyl dye should probably work best.

Hmmm. I used the Fusion for my console, which I lean against and rub against constantly with no scratching or flaking. Maybe because it isn't as flexible as the panels...

You also have to bear in mind that plastics vary quite a bit from one to the next. So while the cargo area plastics are one thing, center console plastics are another. As you said they aren't as flexible and their makeup may be a little different. The Krylon Fusion paint may adhere better to specific types of plastic vs. others.

Both the hard plastic & soft vinyl pcs can be painted. Use Sems dyes & paints and you will have no problem..Picking the correct dye/paint & preping the parts is the imporant thing.

There is a product available at auto paint stores called "plastic prep" or something like that. It comes in a spray can. You just wash your parts, spray on the prep, wait the recomended amount of time and spray on your color. I did the kick panels in my GTO and it turned out great. They're holding up with no problems. I use Rustolium semi-gloss black for an around 60% gloss finish and Krylon semi-flat black for about a 30% gloss, but I think Krylon have recently changed their semi-flat black to to "satin black" with a horrible directional spray tip. I can't find the old version anymore. Also, I always use a new can when starting a project. The constant pressure just leaves a better appearence and you eliminate the chance of the dreaded "sputter dots".

Good luck 87WS6...I have used the SEM's products on my soft vinyl [Console,lid & arm rests] Leather [steering wheel, shifter & brake handle] and on several dash pcs. The product is not cheap, moderately expensive when you factor in the prep products you need to purchase but the materials are easy to use and give you a professional looking apperance. The black color is one of the easiest to work with.

By the way, I don't know if the Krylon fusion is that much better for plastic than their regular paint, I guess they probably added something to it, but I kind of see it as another way of getting more money for the same basic stuff. There seems to be a wave of new products aimed towards the "housewife" home improvement market that has recently exploded ( I mean nothing derogitory in my use of the term housewife, only as reference to a targeted marketing segment [and a powerful one at that]). This new spray tip that their putting on everything now is a great example. What a piece of crap! Please stop fixing things that aren't broken. That's just my opinion, but I feel much better now. And whats with these new gas cans in California. If you other States aren't having these pieces of junk forced down your throat yet, stock up on the vented variety while you've still got the chance. My WWII gerry can works just fine. 10 minutes to put 2 1/2 gallons in your car. I'm not kidding! Don't get me started.

I had all gray interior and wanted all black. i spent a tone of money on sem paint and plastic prep, lint free rags, lite sand paper etc.....


it can be done and it can come out great like it did for me.


but after some wear n tear mostly on the seat parts and door sills you cannot avoid scrapping off the paint and seeeing the other color underneath.


after all the money for supplies and time to do it right 2yrs later i spent 140 on an entire black interior set and ull spend close to that just for supplies to paint an entire interior.

in the end i wish i just bought a whole black set.

you do what you want but if u think theres a chance u cant live with any paint being scrapped off showing the color underneath. u might wana just buy a whole new interior.

you can find people selling a decent set for a decent price. u dont have to pay top dollar which ive seen around 300. it all depends what you want.\

lol, my whole interior is painted grey, just take everything out, do an undercoating, then paint it the color you want.

very light grey. its not even automotive paint. think its levi paint or somekind not shure anymore. and cant find the original can of paint at the moment.

I'll add my vote for the Krylon Fusion as well. Me and the wife sprayed several of those plastic patio chairs with it 4 years ago and every one of them is still holding up just fine. Not one is chipping or cracking. All we did for prep was wash them with dish soap and a scrub brush then spray them once they dried. Took us an afternoon in the summer.

I'll be using it again once I get around to doing the interior in my Camaro.

I've used just about every rattle-can interior paint on the maret. Duplicolor, Krylon Fusion, SEM, and everything else I could find.

I found that the SEM was in a league of it's own. It's far better looking and more durable than the others.

Ultimately though, the durability depends mostly on how you apply it. It's not enough to do the plastic prep and the sanding... you also need to do like the can says and apply several light coats, not one or 2 heavy coats. If you do this, it'll be durable. That doesn't mean that you can expect it to last forever if it's a panel that gets a lot of abuse (like your sill plates), but if it's flaking and chipping (as opposed to just wearing out), then most likely it was not applied correctly.

I've had some of my SEM-painted interior panels for years and they look brand new.

Yeah i will only use SEM brand it sticks the best and won't fade over time.Most make the mistake when they dye not cleaning the piece enough.Soapy water and a good grease and wax remover has worked well for me.

I know its too late but maybe someone will get some use out of this. I painted my interior with krylon fusion and I'm happy with it. Its held up very good through 2 years of blistering TX heat. Hasnt been parked in a garage or even under a tree. I prepped mine with some scotch bright and cleaned it up with some acetone. The key is the prep and application. Use just enough to cover the panel dont go crazy and fill in the grain, I think thats why it gets sticky, too much paint. I did 4 fine coats on my dash with 1 hour dry times between coats. I also had it out of the car and re-installed it by myself so if it was going to come off easily it would have at that time. Just take your time and dont cut corners. Also, use a spray bottle to apply the acetone and work in small areas ause it evaporates extremly fast especially in sunlight.

My main complaint with the Krylon fusion was that it was way too glossy, and went on too thick. No matter how I put it on, it always came out shiny. The SEM stuff is much closer to the original plastic luster. It actually goes on the smooth parts a bit dull, but that gives you the option to wetsand and hand polish it to the exact luster you want.
