Coil Spring

I've ran into some trouble removing the coil spring from my car. I need to replace it, but I have came to find out that the little plastic piece that's built into the steering column that you press the plastic horn button tube and twist into is broken. I need to replace this. Any ideas how to disassemble it?

I used a Dremel and a rat tale file to re-notch the plastic piece so that the spring, which has a small plastic ear that fits into the notch, stays in place.
