question on stock gauges?
I was just intrested to know if their was a definant yes on this?
either way im gunna have to take the dash off and look but wanted to get a rough idea first because I wanted with all new autometer gauges. but i wanted to know if for a stock 1986 firebird/trans am 305 v8 automatic G on the vin, if they put in any maunal or all electric or sum electric guages? lol I was supprised when the spedometer only went to 85 lol I have had it plenty over what it had said, so I now need a 200 mph spedometer

86 is a unique year for the Firebird. The 85mph speedometer was still mechanical, but the 140mph was electric. As mentioned the rest of the gauges are electic. All 87-up Firebirds have electric speedometers.

Not true. I have a 86 cluster sitting in front of me. All electric gauges, also has a 140KPH/85MPH speedo. I have never seen any 86 with a cable speedo.

ok good! hopefully we can get a few nice days so that I can tahe off the dash and check out the gauges, I just wish they had on their something a little faster that 85mph stock lol but ya goin with all autometer ultra lite
Re: question on stock gauges?

Actually, I parted this fine looking POS several years ago, and it had... Wait for it... Wait... Wait... A mechanical speedometer. This car was actually a V8/auto car, but they used the base model speedometer on some V6 cars too. Sorry I don't have a clear pic of the back of the cluster, but you can take my word for it.

Apparently I'm off at least a little bit, because there's an 87 Firebird with the mechanical speedometer documented in this thread.

Re: question on stock gauges?
OK, so the ones that had idiot lights and no tach had a cable speedo. It didn't have anything to do with the 85mph speedo, just the craptastic base (very base) cluster.
Re: question on stock gauges?
The bid wasn't very high, but the shipping and duty fees were astronomical. But yes, it'd be more accurate to say the base model 85mph speedometer was still mechanical. But the point is that not all 86 Firebirds were electric.
