A pilllar and roof molding removal

How do you remove the A-pillar molding that runs the length of the pillar and the roof. This is on a 87 IROC. I tried and already broke a clip.

Thanks!!

Re: A pilllar and roof molding removal

youre going to get a lot of people telling you to search.. its been covered a million times.

Just go to your local dealer and order some new clips before you take them off. You WILL break all of them when taking the pillar off... your car is 22yrs old and they are plastic.

GM part number for the clips is 20462090

fyi the clips are rather expensive, and i found them to break easily even knew( you can pick them up at upholstery shops too) i decided to use the plastic trim push screws, i found they worked better after going through about 20 dollars worth of alligator clips

Welcome to TGO. Check page 3 of the following link for pics of the two types of clips that hold the pillar in place (the upper three, IIRC, are pains):

Re: A pilllar and roof molding removal

Thanks guys for the replies. I can see how the white clips will break but I actually broke the black part on the pillar itself.

This is my 1st restore of a 3rd gen Camaro. Usually deal with the older ones. So far, so good.

I've only seen the door panel style clips on some T-top cars, and then I suspect they may not have been original... The trim will usually break before the above style clip pulls out.

The ones you want are GM part# 20462090. They come 10 to a package, and it just so happens you need 10 for a hardtop. Last time I bought a package they were about $2 a pop.

I haven't bought any since before the millenium... So no, you probably didn't get screwed.

For what is worth, on my coupe, the above were only used on the upper portion of the pillar. The windshield portion used the Christmas tree version.

Re: A pilllar and roof molding removal

On my 85 all I had to do to remove the A pillar was slide the entire A pillar cover toward the back of the car. The cover came off without breaking a clip. I put it back on the same way, just slid it forward.

I vaguely remember attempting that when I put the pillar back, but goofy oaf that I am, I could never line the clips up in a fashion that would allow what you suggest. Worth a try though.

The B pillar, or the cover in front of the sail panel.. That was a bi*** to get out.. Left that black plactic fastener disconnected when I reassembled it
