I have been in the market for 4th generation camaro seats for some time now. I have a silver 85 z28 and my seats are pretty much torn to shreds. Well I just found a set that are black and grey cloth the hole set in near perfect condition for 150 dollars.

Now the drivers seat is power, I am just curious to whether the I can just remove the 4th gen seat off the track and place it on my 3rd gen seat track in order to have manual movement of seats.

I also have heard many times that these 4th gen seats bolt right up in a 3rd generation car, but for the sake of hearing it again. Is this true?

i believe very strongly it is true!!!!

also it will not work with the tracks like that i believe, but all you need to do it run a power wire and a ground, a body ground would probably even work, and walah you have power seat

 

I had a full set of leather seats from an '02 SS in my '89 IROC and yes they bolt right up literally. You should have no trouble with that at all.

Yes. The rear seats are virtually identical to the third gen seats. The only difference is that fourth gen back seats only have a solid rear seat back while third gens have an option for split rear seats.

 

i put in a set of 4th gen .. best upgrade so far IMO,, totally worth the money.. i just hooked up a cigarette lighter attachment to the seat ,.. (how often do you move the seat right?) and when i do need to ajust the seat i just pull the wire out from under the seat and plug it in .. i may take the time to run a wire under the carpet , but so far this is working just fine.. and yes they all bolt right up as if they were made to ..

 

Damn that's ghetto. I'd just run the wire properly once and be done with it.

 

yep - fronts and rears are direct bolt in. keep the power track attached and run a fused power wire and a ground to it and use the power!

Also it is worth mentioning that the 4th generation leather seats that came in the Trans Am are virtually identical to the 3rd generation "Ultima" seat that came in the GTA. The only difference is the Ultimas have the "ET head" shaped head rests while the fourth generation seats use a different design. When you get fourth generation power seats, simply get them with the wiring and you can easily wire them up like they would have been at the factory.

ya i normanlly would but i didnt get the chance when i out them in .. but then found i have yet to move them from the position i have them in the last 2 years as im the only driver so i have just left it that way with the wire tucked up under the seat ..someday i will take the time to run it right..

 

I put a set of 97 cloth seats in a 92, it's a bolt in affair. For power I ran a wire from the back of the fuse box, hooked into the power window fuse, ran a wire down to the seat for power and the grounded the seat to one of the floor bolts. Power seat works great.

 

Would the drivers side fourth gen seat fit onto power third gen track? (person selling just the seats without tracks for $150 and the seats are in great shape and this is the one thing I need to know before i pull the trigger.)

i am no electronics person and for a power wire would that say go to the battery? my ciggarette lighter does not work so i am curious and ground wire to say the body?

 

3rd & 4th gen seats/seat tracks are interchangeable.I have my original power seat track on 97 T/A articulated seats (lumbar).I even swapped the 4th gen dr. seat track w/the pivot feature over to my pass side (w/a little work).

Also w/regard to the 3rd & 4th gen power lumbar seats.From a cosmetic stand point, other than the headrest.They are indentical, but the lumbar features are better on the early versions.On the side lumbar 3rd gens use a metal flap that moves in/outboard when the bladder is in/deflated.The seatback has a steel sheet that supports the bladder for the lower back.

4th gen seats just have the bladder in the seat foams lumbar support.This just inflates when the lumbar is applied.It doesnt phisically move in & out.Like the 3rd gen.The difference is very noticeable side by side.On the lower back, 4th gens have a burlap net stretched across the setback frame.When the bladder is inflated it pushes out & backward away from your lower back.Since the burlap material is nowhere near as rigid as the steel sheet on the 3rd gens.Again the difference is noticeable side by side.

I swapped the seat back frames when i switch from 3rd gen to 4th gen articulated seats.Best of both worlds, as i had to swap/cut/reweld the headrest supports.I also needed to relocate the pwr seat track switch to the inboard side of the seat.A ford taurus switch was used because the stock 84 type was too thick & wedged up against the center console.

Not trying to Hijack this threat but with 4th gen seats I just got back my old 88 Trans am I sold 10 years ago. Interior was 90% stripped out but with non bolted down 4th gen seats. Anyone know the size of the nut size that goes into the stud on the floor perhaps ?. I didn't want to open a new thread for a bolt question. Also the power seats just wire off the cig lighter ?

 

13mm, Id run power from its own battery source.

Here's a spot on my Camaro ,(should be one with a similar function on any of our cars )that is perfect to run power to anything such as axillary fans and would be perfect for the seat. Its called a "Battery Junction Block".


Its very "HOT" at all times so disconnect the Positive and Negative terminals from the battery before touching it.


Run a fairly large wire 14gage and higher depending on "draw".


Place a inline fuse on that wire close to the Junction Block and run the wire to the unit being powered. Then your ground wire and you should be good to go.


Its the unit with the heavy black and red wire going to it next to the battery.

The best way to go about it (if you have the option) is to grab the wiring from a donor Thirdgen, or even general seat wiring from a GM vehicle. Anyway, I recall the wiring going along the door sill, inside of the plastic conduit about half way, and then goes across to a slit cut in the carpeting. You could mark where the electric seat connector is while the 4th gen seat is in place. Then you'd run the wiring while the floor is still bare, and then pull it through when you install the carpet. I think it's all plug and play, I even had the proper connector (orange?) to the power block.

 

I'm going to have to figure it all out. The whole interior except the dash and some of the rear are ripped out of the car right now and ready for all the new stuff but I'd like to get all the proper wiring set before I start bolting things back in. On top of that I have to find the fan relay wherever that so it turns on. I'm ok with switches but at the same time if you forget to turn it on your going to have problems. I'd rather have it come on automatically with a 160 thermo.

 

Look for the fan relay(s) in the engine compartment, by the
brake booster/master cylinder.

Running the power seats off the cig-lighter is very risky.
Those are high current motors, that should have at least
12 ga. wire for the power/ground circuit. Cig-lighter is
16 or 18 gauge. Just my

 

I figured they were somewhere in that region. This is my "Historical" cruiser I didn't see a point in tossing in switch to cool accordingly. I'd rather it turn on as needed . Also did the inline fuse with ground to the seats. Works great

 

Once read the 4th gen seats give a bit more leg room because they further back.
Is that the case.

 

They do sit further back from what I am noticing yes, on the third gen. But my 4th gen they seem to sit further up. Engineering I tell ya lol

 

I can't believe anyone does this swap, 4th gen seats are far less comfortable. Not worth the better looks. I've been living with a '94 for a year now, and I'm glad I finally parked it.

 

Couldn't agree more. They really aren't worth anything besides the looks the comfort level is sub par in my opinion especially the leather ones. The cloth was the most comfortable in my opinion. My 3rd gen had a nice pair of OEM 88 cloth seats installed in the car but the guy I sold it too scrapped them (so he say's) and tossed some 4th gen seats inside of it. Now some 5th gen Camaro seats if they fit I may consider those for sure. I have an 11 and they are down right comfortable
