shift **** removal

Hi everyone, I have a 92 z28 automatic 700r4 with the leather wrapped shifter. I have searched these forums on removal of the shift ****. All of them say there is a small clip on the back side (radio side) of the shifter.

However, mine does not have this clip. I have pulled off the center shift release button and do not see a clip down there either. So i have no clue how to get the shift **** off.

I'd like to remove it without destroying it, but I guess I'll do whatever it takes.

Does anyone have any idea of how I can remove it?

Agh. I don't remember which one that is. I took mine off right away because it used to jam all the time. It's not press fit though. It's either one of the two. The snap ring may not be easy to see.

Re: shift **** removal

With you foot on the brake try putting the car in first to see if it doesn't have a slit for a U shaped clip in the front. Sorry I wasn't much help.

Re: shift **** removal

I went out to the shed...

And found the old square style I had, It was a solid plastic one but it had nothing for a U-shaped clip so I'm pretty sure it used a c-clip under the button. Try wiggling it to see if you can see anything or maybe a small shot of WD-40 in there to wash any dirt out of the c-clip holes.

You're looking for this right?

Someone may have used a different style as well. You should be able to see the top portion of this, from the groove up:

On some of these the center plastic piece pulls out. Don't force it if yours doesn't, but if you can remove it you should be able to see if anything crosses the groove area from a different angle.

Someone could have thrown one of these in there as well:

Re: shift **** removal

The round ball **** has a snap ring under the button. The **** on later models such as yours are held on with a clip.

Here's two shots showing the location of the clip. It's shaped like a huge, unbent staple. Pry the clip out with a small bladed tool. The **** pulls up and off.
