Re: LOCKED KEYS IN CAR NEED HELP ASAP

I've used my wallet to slip in between the top of the glass & body, to hold the glass out, then used my cane (I'm physically handicapped) to slide the lock slider to the Unlock position.

In other words....Just slide something in & use it to slide the Lock/Unlock slider, then the outside handle will easily open it, because it is no longer locked.

Re: LOCKED KEYS IN CAR NEED HELP ASAP

Well, used the coat hanger and it got stuck along with ripping my weather stripping so I have about an inch of coat hanger sticking out with ripped weatherstrip. Got a ride home so I guess I'll have to go back to it in the morning. Thanks all for the help.

Thats how Vin Deisel may get into his car, but i dont know if its for us normal people.

My advice is befriend a midget cover him in butter and try and have him crawl through the fire wall. Or you could try to slip him in through the weatherstripping.

If neither of these work for you try telling your doors you feeling and dreams, and maybe they will open up to you.

(Or call a locksmith your call)

Re: LOCKED KEYS IN CAR NEED HELP ASAP

I locked my keys in my car once while working on it. This was my ONLY set of car keys.

It depends on where they are in the car, but this might work for you.

the rear top corner of the window is where it can be pulled away from the body the further without breaking it (maybe 1/2 inch or so). I made a U at one end of a coathanger, and slipped it into the car. I then went 'fishing' for my keys. After about 5 minutes I hooked them and pulled them up towards the window. I was not able to get my entire keychain out, but was able to pull the window away just enough so that I could slide my door key and the keyring it was on outside the car.

I then worked it off of the keyring, let the rest of the keys fall back into the car and unlocked the door.

Good luck.

Re: LOCKED KEYS IN CAR NEED HELP ASAP

I used one of those real long cb radio antenna's trucks use. I slipped it through between the glass and weather stripping and pushed the antenna to the other door's lock and opened it that way.

Re: LOCKED KEYS IN CAR NEED HELP ASAP

Make yourself an over-under tool. The idea is to make a tool you can use to go under the window and inside the car so you can press the power lock button. Just use caution if your windows are tinted. Get yourself a coat hanger. Straighten it out. Bend it twice so it looks like a Z. Pull the window wipe back from the glass where the top of the door meets the window. If you've got something you can wedge between the rubber and the window it sometimes make it a bit easier. Slip the wire Z into the gap you've created until the two bends are inside the door. Turn the end a bit to place the point on the inside edge of the glass and lift/tilt up until the bend closest to you is under the window, and the other bend is inside the car on the other side of the glass. Move it so the free end presses the unlock button. The hard part is getting the wire back out of the door.

Pulling the window out and using a yard stick or a broom handle to push the lock sometimes works, but if the windows are still tight that might not be an option. Same with a slim-jim. But it's almost caveman easy to make an over-under and just unlock the door.

Re: LOCKED KEYS IN CAR NEED HELP ASAP

Locked mine in my car once, I wasn't about to call AAA.

So I just pulled that window back and stuck my forearm in and unlocked it.

It hurt like hell but at least it didn't cost me 50 bucks to have it opened.

Re: LOCKED KEYS IN CAR NEED HELP ASAP

is it power or manual locks? if its power well then this should be easy, find a way to hit the unlock button. if its manual, ha i now the feeling. bust the window, but whos trying to go to a junk yard or get a new window? bust the lock...cant lock ur door then but hey you can get in! i would recommend the passenger side as when i did that it knocked the outside handle bar thing off (door wouldnt open from the outside) or get a slim jim... or get a coat hanger and use it top unlock it, or fish for your keys.

just thought of something, do you have a hatch release button in your car? if so hit it.

when you get your keys out whats the 1st thing your gona do? get some spares made, right?

I agree. These cars are old and a slim jim will work. Tow truck will cost less than lock smith usually. Cab drivers also usually have slim jims and will let you use it. Also, check with your insurance on roadside assistance. Most people pay for it unknowingly. It will cover a lock out.

Re: LOCKED KEYS IN CAR NEED HELP ASAP

I'm surprised no one has mentioned if you have Ttops it's really really really easy to pull the window away and pop the top latch (assuming they aren't locked anyway).

Re: LOCKED KEYS IN CAR NEED HELP ASAP

If you have proof of ownership the dealership can pull the codes from the VIN and cut a key for you. The Data base only goes back to 1990 and it will only work if your locks have not been changed at some point in the past. Also GM has been cracking down on the dealerships for not getting proof of ownership and there is a bit of paperwork involved for every code they pull so many dealerships are now charging $ to look them up. Just don't show up without a title or insurance paperwork that dosen't have your name and VIN on it because they probably won't cut you a key. The dealership could get a large fine for every keycode that they look up that dosen't have the correct paperwork done.

Really. There was a booming business for a few years for aftermarket ttop locks that would prevent the tops from being unlatched. GM added the locks to prevent theft of the car, not the ttops.

Re: LOCKED KEYS IN CAR NEED HELP ASAP

we had a special "f-body opener tool" at the pontiac dealership i worked at. 3/8" steel rod about 4 ft long with a 90* bend 1/2" from the end. slides right throught the upper corner of the weather strip, hook on to the lock slider and viola!
i learned a lot about stealing cars at that job. we did a lot of theft recovery (dealership was in silver spring, MD, just over the D.C line) so i learned how to open and start a variety of GM cars w/ no keys.

The other one that's not always really obvious is to look around under the car. About 50% of the thirdgens I've owned have had an extra key up under the car from a previous owner.

Agree, get a spare, mine was $2 at the local Ace. Did that so many time in the past years it was not fun. Spare helps out a lot. Cheaper and is not going to cut or damage your window striping.

You gotta have girlish, malnourished, white trash, tiny hands. Earlier cars tend to be more sloppy about the window fit too.

as long as its pre VATS (its was back in 89 when i worked there) ill be in and away in 30seconds. I know a trick for disabling early vats alarms too, but you still have to take them with a towtruck.
you really want to see a quick heist, ill take any non-alarmed jeep before you can say "hey mother=====, thats my car!
here in VT people are always locking there keys in their Jeeps (usually running) they always give me that suspicious "what prison did you just get out of" look when it take me literally 3 seconds with a slim jim or coat hanger to open it. jeep door locks are a joke.

When I went to buy my 1986 Camaro, the seller of the car locked the keys in the car, BOTH sets... What an Idiot. Although, coat hangers do wonders.

Heh, that doesn't work as well as you might think....it wasn't with my camaro(its not even running yet) but once i locked them in my lumina when I was at my mom's house, guess where I had my coat and wallet...worst part was, we spent like 3 hours trying to get into it, and i first asked her if she had the spare keys to it(I was sure she did). But she said she didn't.. So we gave up and left it for the next day to deal with, then she finds the spare keys -_-
/facepalm

I've been brainstorming where to hide a key on the exterior of car, haven't thought of a good way to do it yet though. But it would probably be the most elegant preemptive solution, quick, easy, and no risk of damaging something.

Re: LOCKED KEYS IN CAR NEED HELP ASAP

i've been able to pry out the right side window and hook the keys with a hanger. once, i was doing this and they slipped off and fell between the seats. i had a spare set in the console because i let a friend drive it and he put them there afterwords. i was able to open the lid, go to the driver's side, and fish out those keys...

But she said she didn't.. So we gave up and left it for the next day to deal with, then she finds the spare keys -_-
/facepalm

I've been brainstorming where to hide a key on the exterior of car, haven't thought of a good way to do it yet though. But it would probably be the most elegant preemptive solution, quick, easy, and no risk of damaging something.

i found that for just the door key that under the fuel filer neck theres a hole that the long put of the key will go tho, but the ley loop is to big to fit tho. but the way it sits it is hidden but still easy to get out.

Re: LOCKED KEYS IN CAR NEED HELP ASAP

The ignition key does work to open the doors, you just gotta mess around with it, took me about 10 or 15 minutes of messing around with the door to finally get it open, if my memory serves me right it's the passenger door that I got my car open with both times I've locked myself out. Just make sure you don't break the key inside, you gotta be gentle with it.

If your door locks are worn bad enough that the ignition key fit, then they're not very far from any flat thin object is a master key. Technically the door locks are supposed to be lubricated on a regular basis. Most don't get the preventive maintenance. I've seen a few that would open with any screwdriver, knife blade, etc.

OOOooHHHHHH man that sucks. You tore the weather strip and you left the hanger hanging out for about an inch. If I where there, I would tell the 1 inch hanging hanger, HOW'S IT HANGING? .. All jokes aside. I would go back and try my best to unlock that sucker. If some druggie see's it, He's got nothing tolose if he breaks the window and drives off with your car. Or if a cop see's it like that, he may believe that the Camaro is being vandalized or even abandoned and call a tow truck. Sorry man.

Re: LOCKED KEYS IN CAR NEED HELP ASAP

Haha alright brotherhood, got the car back the next morning and here's how it went:
Got the car (friend took me; awesome.)
Took the car back to my house after gassing it up (felt like an idiot with the coat hanger sticking out at Wawa)
Looked in my chilton to figure out how to take off the door panel. (realized the chilton randomly uses words unknown to anyone born after 1880)
Took the door panel off just fine but realized afterwards how effin' soft the plastic around the door handle is when I saw a couple scratches. (still angry I wasn't more careful.)
Got the jaws of life to get the coat hanger out of the weirdest spot for it to get stuck.

Moral of the story: Sometimes... I'm an idiot.
