I'm getting my buddies cup holders that came factory on his firebird. I'm curious if they will just go on my camaro's doors or is there a bolt pattern or something I have to drill?

 

At the very least you need the plastic inserts that snap into the door for the bolts. I'd assume right off hand that 1989 and older cars don't have the cut outs in the door.

Honestly, I've owned two Firebirds with the cupholders. The novelty wears off pretty fast. Any reasonable size fast food drink is heavy enough to break the factory cupholders if you close the doors with the drink in the holder. They tend to get in the way of feet too. It doesn't take too long before they start to get ratty. I'd rather have door panels without holes, then banged up, scuffed up, cracked, cupholders, or door panels with holes where they were added and then removed. Door panels are more expensive and harder to find then good cupholders.

if you're looking to do cupholders, get yourself a 4th gen firebird console. relatively inexpensive (can be had for $100 easily) and its almost bolt in and go.

 

I like it but I'm wanting not to change that. I'm thinking I might just cut the s/w panel is suppose to be out. since i never had the options put in and cut a hold to make a cupholder

 

They have a guide on how to make your own cup holder and it looks pretty damn easy, you should try it.

Original parts are getting harder to find, and good used parts aren't always easy to find. I'd avoid cutting holes, drilling holes, or otherwise modifying good used parts if at all possible, because there's a good chance if you cut something and don't like it you're going to be stuck with it for a long time.

Because I'm not getting any luck on plastic holders for this. i want to get something thats about 4" tall and a base to it so i could glue it on.. nothing in our cubboards are like in the picture...

Back to your original question. Your 89 should have the holes for the firebird door mounted map pocket/cup holder already stamped into the inner door skin. There are three square holes. You'll just need to buy the white plastic inserts commonly used to mount license plates from an auto parts store and push them into the holes. Then put a pencil or screw with paint on it in the hole of the insert to mark the back side of the door panel, then push a hole through with an awl. Mine has a few scuffs on it, but I've never had them get in my way. Drew just has big clumsy feet is all. lol

I don't, because I know how expensive they are to replace... However, it's not exactly polite to preach at every passenger to watch their feet. In spite of being careful the top anchor point on my drivers side cup holder still got broken. To the best of my knowledge I never got close to it, and never used it for anything more then holding cups.

I suppose the observed 1 in 10 survival rate of the factory cup holders doesn't apply either. I've looked at a bunch of 90-92 Firebirds over the years, and the majority have either broken, cracked, scuffed to death, or simply missing cup holders. Leading me to believe that the status quo is big clumsy feet.

I don't condone cutting up door panels to add parts that aren't going to last long, the same way I don't condone cutting up or swapping center consoles so people can eat in their cars. If you can't hold onto a drink and drive at the same time, then there's something wrong. Maybe a minivan is a more appropriate solution?

 

id have to have three arms and hands to eat and drive mine, its a 5-speed...lol

 

for cup holders dose anyone know if you can put a can of pop in them with a CD player installed? id like to see a pic looks like it would be a tight fit
Can you fit a bigger pop in them than just a can as well say a Micky D's glass pics would be appreciated TY


Also a Sub woofer port hole might be about the right size and they can be bought for pretty cheep about 5 dollars a pice and they would look nice ....

thanks all for the replys. I just did the /cupholder link and i'm waiting on the recessed cup holders from amazon. 3"Dia x 3 1/8th"Depth, I already have the plexiglass cut and painted.

 

my solution was the cheap double cup holders from walmart i think its called a "wedge cup holder" or something really cheap, no drilled holes or fabrication just wedge it between pass seat and console, i did glue some felt to the back of it so it doesnt scratch the console though, but it works good

 

Most drive throughs have a garbage can right past the window. You can also have them delete the drink from your value menu. Some places even offer drinks in bottles with screw on lids. All of these options are more attractive then cutting up my console.
