Big Guy, Little Car

Ok so I am a big guy, 6"3, and about 260lb....

I love my Camaro, But it is a pain fitting into it.

When my hair is longer it constantly rubs against the ceiling (no T-tops), my knees constantly hit that little bezel where the headlight control is...and its just a tight fit.

I am currently strolling around without the driver side door panel off for more room.

Ive done some searches and found a lot of stuff about 4th gen seats but nothing really more then that...

Are there any other ideas that can help fit my big self into this car? shortening the seat rails, modifying that bezel for the head lights? any other ideas?

Anything you guys have done to make it more comfortable?

I myself am 6' 3" and weigh in at 200. I have a 92 camaro and feel as though I have more room in there than my extended cab truck. Did you look at the seat rails to ensure the last person to have the car didn't have it custom moded of a short person?

Re: Big Guy, Little Car

Im 6'2" and 215 lbs and agree with jimez1--I have tons of room and not once have considered a need to modify the seats or door panels to make things more comfortable. I agree on checking the seat rails to see if they were previously modified. To answer your question I do believe that 4th gen seats sit lower and will give you more headroom.

6'2 and 210 here.... I have room to move around, but I will add that going to 4th gen seats helped with headroom a lot. But I wouldnt say it gave me more than 1-2 inches in any given direction. You sound like you just need a bigger car.

Re: Big Guy, Little Car

Just a question, Do any of you guys have T-tops?

My bro has an 86 transam with T-tops and I noticed it was a much better fit.

I fit ok, but but seat is leaned a little too far back, and me knee always hits that damn bezel for the headlight control...Im seriously debating removing that thing.

Any suggestions on how to check the seat rails? My bros car is 3000 miles away, and this is my first third gen, I really have no idea what they should look like...

Re: Big Guy, Little Car

im 6'6", i fit ok with the t-tops, not head room issues. I usually have the seat back a little though. I did make some plates to move my seat back 2.5" in my 86, so i have tons of leg room. I didnt have to make the plate in my 92 though, i dont know why i seem to have more room in that car, but i do. Its a hardtop, and again no headroom issues.

I has a lot to do with how you are built too, i have a 36" inseam.

Re: Big Guy, Little Car

Yeah, in the searches, ive noticed a consistency between newer third gens and no complaints on space...so SOMETHING must have changed...

I also dont have a tape measure around to measure my inseam, but my height is pretty well proportioned, no extremely long legs or anything.

No one else has had issues with their knee and the headlight thing though?

Re: Big Guy, Little Car

the second number in most mens mens pant sizes is the end seam. i'm 5'10 or so and weigh about 215 and and wear 36x32 pants, so my end seam is 32 inches . but i have shorter legs and a large torso so alot of my problems are the fact that im broad shouldered and my arms sometimes get cramped, especially when sharing the center arm rest

Re: Big Guy, Little Car

I feel your pain as I am 6'3", 270 and have a 31" inseem. I have a 91 Firebird hardtop and would love to be able to sit up one more notch to keep my neck from getting sore without my hair rubbing the headliner. I have considered 4th gen seats and aftermarket seats but hate to drop the money without knowing the results. I hope you find a fix and post it here. I am knee deep in body work right now but would like to make a seat choice when money frees up a little.

Re: Big Guy, Little Car

6'1 260 30-32" inseam, the T/A fits ok but I noticed with my Mazda (MX6, similar to probe) I have to recline the seats pretty far to keep my hair off the roof.

My Mazda has a sun roof that gives an inch or so more room than a regular hard top but it's still a bit low. Weirdly an MX3 (obviously a size smaller than the 6) is easier to get into and has several inches of room.

If you dont want to change the upulstry a simpler potential solution is a drivers side Fiero seat rail/bracket. It should give you an inch or more without mismatched interior.

Re: Big Guy, Little Car

I'm 6'2" and I fit into my 91 T/A convertible just fine; top up and down. I am skinny though, I think I weigh 150-160? Haven't checked in a while. Getting in and out is a little harder compared to others due to my height and the low car but that's about it. I'm much more comfortable in this thing than my mom's 2002 Acura MDX... and my car has its original seats! That sucks to hear that its so tight for you... I wonder if the seat's been modified before at all.

Re: Big Guy, Little Car

I'm 6'2' and 240. I seem to fit better in my 92, which is a hardtop, compared to my 88 which has t-tops. The seat does seem a little lower and I dont know if it is from being a hardtop or a newer model. In the 88 I have to lean the seat back a little more. Once I'm in either car I am plenty comfy.

Wasn't someone talking about Fiero seat rails lowering the seats like 2 inches... Maybe get Fiero Seat rails with 4th gen seats...

Im 6'2, 210, 32 inch inseam... and my car is a hard top. I fit fine. I just wish I had a little more room to stretch out my legs, but since I changed to a manual it works out fine so I can get full travel on the clutch.

Also, my fourth gen seats are on 3rd gen rails. Lighter that way, but Im not sure how that affects the seat height, but I think the seats themselves are literally deeper, because I dont feel like I need that one extra notch of legroom anymore anyway. I've only had em in the car a month or so now, but now taht I think about it, I dont really feel like I need any extra leg room either. I think GM must have addressed that with the 4th gen cars. I can even fit more comfortably in the rear 4th gen seats since the seat bottoms are so much deeper. I could handle it for 20 minutes or so probably.

4th gen seats are 2inch lower. Im the tallest person here. 6'5 290 pounds. with my army jacket and pig glasses, you wont see me, just a cloud of smoke. Im upgrading to after-market simulated leather seats from kragen whenever the get on sale. I got the t-tops or whatever and that helps a lot. i have the steering wheel tilt all the way up. im 9 1/2 inches too...meaning body off ground. what helps is the sher fact that people look twice and end the end, taillights.

Re: Big Guy, Little Car

I would also recommend the fourth gen seats. I got them in my trans am because the old seats were shot, and when I put them in I could definitely notice a difference; they were more comfortable and lower. I would guess around 2 inches.

I am 6'1'', and in my 84 with the fourth gen seats and the t-tops, I have about five inches of head room.

I'm 6'8", 38 inch inseam, 240 pounds, but I've been 310 until recently

I just moved to 4th gen seats and found that they did give me a little more head and leg room. It helped that I got a power drivers seat, as I was able adjust the tilt to give me max comfort

um... would you care to tell me how eating better is going to change the fact that I'm 6'8"?

250 may seem like a lot to somebody who's not over 6 feet tall, but I think I look rather skinny. this picture was taken when I was about 260... and now I'm in the 240's

Thats true. Im still not so used to the pounds cause I still have the kg in the back of my head from Europe. But I am 6'4 and I really have no problems at all in the Camaro. I never had more space than in there.

Remember that muscle weighs more than fat. But for some people (I'm talking about people in general) you're right.

.... I'm pretty sure I'm tall because I ate healthily when I was young. (although I don't seem tall compared to some people on this board, wow guys). My brother looks like he might be as tall as me, maybe taller, and he never drank milk when he was younger. That is agrivating lol. I thought this thread was about height and headroom/legroom?

Last I checked eating/living more healthily will not make you shorter

What I read in the first post was that he had to drive around without driver side door panel. Thats sounds more like wide than tall.

Is that why Muscle Cars are always so damn heavy?

Re: Big Guy, Little Car

Its not a width problem.

I drive around without the driver side door panel so my knee can go there, otherwise it hits that panel where the light switch is, and that is annoying.

I dont think we should be discussing what people should do with their lives, just their cars.

I fit fine on the X and Z axis...its the Y im having trouble with. Plus the electric seats dont help, I cant seem to find anyway to simply tilt the back of the seat without moving the actual seat cushion.

I think he makes the tallest 3rd gen owner (known of) yet here on TGO. Sorry but "tallest person" you aren't!

I ran 4ty gen seats several 3rd gens ago & after that? It became my first mod in any new 3rd gen I got.

I just picked up a 92 and noticed that Its really tight. How far back does your seat track go? My stops with about a good 12 inches between the back of the seat and the back seat cushion -- that cant be right! Anyone post up a pick of their seat fully back?

With my 4th gen cloth seats (i just went out & measured for you) I don't even have 12" when they are fully forward!

11" all the way forward, 4" all the way back, measured from the top of the rear seat bottom, to the front seat back. Depending on how reclined your front seat is, it will vary a bit.

thanks for going out and measuring for me. I just bought the car, but im going to have to mod the seat rails because my knees are jammed up against the dash and Im only 6'2.5" Okay sure im a bit chubby, but i swore my older third gens had more leg room than this car does. My ole buddy told me to pop the track and make sure its not being blocked my a foreign object. The seat was also in the same position for 5 years while the car was waiting on me to buy it. I have to go take a picture.. it just cant be that small inside! brb

False alarm! Seat track is just old. I went out and put some muscle into trying to move the seat back and it went back another 3" and NOW i fit.

Re: Big Guy, Little Car

I had a 2nd gen camaro that leaked water. This caused the rear floor to collect water. This caused my seat track to rust solid.

Might be a good time to see if any water is getting in back there.
