steering wheel horn cylinder contact.

Does anyone know where I can get a new little cylinder retainer that holds the spring loaded horn wire onto the contact for the horn? The cylinder that is broken is the piece where the pen is pointing, not the spring wire piece.

Re: steering wheel horn cylinder contact.

That would be the turn signal cancelling cam. Tough to find in a yard unless you happen to own a steering wheel puller and a lock plate remover or the column is already in pieces. Try to find one at an auto parts store.. They may have it. While you're there, you can rent the 2 tools I listed above.

Maverick H1L, Thank you so much. I've been pulling my hair for so long trying to figure out what the piece was called. Good deal. I'm going to call around the parts store. Agian, thanks.

Maverick H1L, Is this the correct cancelling cam for my 86 IROC-Z? or is it a different one than the one in the picture.

No. Go to just about any autoparts store and look in the HELP! section. There are only two varieties for GM cars. A white and a green, I want to say the green is for non-tilt columns, white is for tilt columns.

Re: steering wheel horn cylinder contact.

Actually, this is the part that I need. Just this piece. If you look closely, you can see the cut at the top where the black tube (my first picture) would screw into. I'm going to call GM to see what they say. Thanks guys.

Sorry, I can't tell from the pic, but if enough plastic is showing, it's possible to re-notch the plastic (I used a Dremel and a rat tail file). Works great.

I never thought of that. I got a Dremel with a rat tail file type . Time to rent some tools from AutoZone. Thanks for the tip JamesC.

Re: steering wheel horn cylinder contact.

That steering wheel is out of a Chevy truck... Early 90's S10 or Tahoe, Silverado, etc. All Z28's up to 89 came with a 3 spoke leather wheel with the Camaro emblem in the middle, including Irocs.

Re: steering wheel horn cylinder contact.

The first one you posted is the vinyl/plastic Berlinetta style wheel, the second one looks right. There are some minor differences along the line, but they're all basically the same.

Re: steering wheel horn cylinder contact.

As you might have guessed, finding a 20 year old leather steering wheel in good condition isn't easy. That's why Grant wheels, and substitutes from other cars (like the Berlinetta wheel) are so popular. It's been common to see other wheels, even 3 spoke Firebird wheels in Camaros since the early 90's.

Re: steering wheel horn cylinder contact.

I chose a Grant because of its general similarity to OE. Should you wish to compare, there's a pic in my Car Details below.
