I know that the LED gauge topic has been beaten to death, but I have been searching and searching and haven't found what I'm looking for.

I have a 3.1L '92 RS and like most everyone else, I hate the yellow tint in the gauges, shifter plate and HVAC control. I pulled off my shifter plate the other day and found out that the reason that it appears yellow is because of a yellow piece of plastic that the light shines through that actually moves with the shifter. I was wondering if anyone has taken off the HVAC or gauges and found that the yellow aspect of these is only semi permanent as well as I'm thinking about doing the LED or bulb conversion with either purple, red or blue lights (I have the purple haze exterior and I recently purchased a head unit that has vibrant blue and red). If I can't remove the yellow from the gauges, I think that I'll go with blue in the shift indicator and red LEDs in the HVAC and gauge cluster, but I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to be able to get rid of the yellow, and I figured I would ask on here before I started blowing my car up.

What I would ideally like to do is have all of my interior lights match the head unit and then tie in the purple theme that I have outside of the car (purple paint, purple underglow, purple-ish tinted wondows) with neons in the interior. My goal for this car if for it to be the ultimate cruiser for this summer, not for it to be fast (and I promise I'm doing all of the neons tastefully). :-)

Also, feel free to post pictures of any interiors from the 90-92 range with the LED conversion.

 

Generally all the later cars use tinted plastic lenses to get the colors, but I'm pretty sure what you'll find is that it can't be changed easily.

 

Alright, then has anyone had any success with those white face gauge covers masking the appearance of the yellow numbering? I really don't have the cash sitting around to purchase a white faced gauge cluster if I could even find one.

 

You can put a different colored light or LED behind the HVAC controls, I have a green one behind mine. The yellow doesn't affect the color a whole lot, but i still used a blue marker where the light shines through the plastic to alter the color to somewhat match the teal of my digital gauges. The one you'll have fun with is the defrost switch, probably the easiest way is to color the back side of the rocker with whatever color you want it to be.

Experiment with different lights and see what it does

 

The HVAC controls the lettering is just painted on and backlit with a bulb, what you could do is just use one from an earlier year with the white lettering if you just want to get rid of the yellow.

As for the gauges, what I plan on doing is having some white lettering ones made. I found some places online that do custom printing, basically you'll have to send them your gauges, they'll scan them and then create new gauges for you. I plan on having them replace the yellow with white, and then maybe add some extra icons in the blank spots of the gauges that aren't currently used.

It won't be cheap I'm sure, but it would be pretty custom plus I can then use any LED color I want since the lettering will be white.

 

That's what mine look like. And dont worry I've got new seats and floormats and the interior looks much better now.

There's a slight yellow tint to them, but it looks a lot better.

 

Thanks so much for the picture! So you got the color change gauge faces from that one ebay store "white gauges"? I'm seeing about $50 for the gauges and the color change. I think those look better than the white gauges and definitely better than the yellow ones.

 

Alright, I figured out how to eliminate the yellow tint to the shifter plate and make the shift indicator red. I have a blue LED in my shift plate now (looks totally sick and it's a true blue, i figured out how to make it so there was nothing between the LED and the shift plate but open air) and a blue LED behind my HVAC (I cracked the plastic though as I was pulling it out. I am planning on doing my gauges now, and I'm pretty sure that I am doing them in red. I've heard that for that I will only need 4 bulbs as thats all that illuminates the gauges on the 92. Has anyone done this and is it true? If so, that's great news. I've been looking all over for this answer all night tonight and can't seem to find it.

 

All you need is 4, plus whatever idiot lights you may have across the top. Sorry, no pics, I don't have the analog gauges in my 92 any more.
