Pontiac Steering Wheel Replacement Help

I need to do something with my steering wheel, replace, refurbish.. something.
I'm not even sure how to get the horn button off without breaking it so i sure could use some help from you guys who have done my type of wheel.

During my search here i came across a black aftermarket wheel, three spoke with holes that looks just like the 79 Trans Am stock wheel, love it but no info.

Also came across an after market wheel that had the stock horn button installed.. now that would be great!

I love the stock wheel but it is not as nice as the rest of the car.

Any pictures, instructions or suggestions would be Greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Pontiac Steering Wheel Replacement Help

I replaced my radio control wheel with one like yours. The leather was all ripped off of my plus the one like you've got is badass. Here is what you need to do:

1. Pop the horn button off with a screwdriver, there is a small slot at the base in one place for a screwdriver.

2. Remove the horn contact.

3. Take off the center bolt holing the wheel on to the shaft in the steering column. You might need to hit it with some WD-40 to break it loose. Hold the wheel with one hand and turn your wrench with the other.

4. Remove the steering wheel. You will need a steering wheel puller. I bought one at Tractor Supply for less than $10. There are two bolt holes in your steering wheel specifically for the puller. I had to wrench the hell out of mine to get it off but it goes back on much easier.

Let me know if you come up with a good way to refurbish your factory wheel. I'd really like to do something with mine too. Hope this helps.

Re: Pontiac Steering Wheel Replacement Help

I came across this on another site…All the members spoke very highly of the quality & craftsmanship. You could send them a e-mail asking if they do a 3rdgen wheel.

After you remove the horn cap, make sure to push in and turn the connector at the wheel to release it. Many people break the white plastic piece that holds the contact in place.

You can "rent" a steering wheel puller from any auto parts store for free. You may have to leave a deposit until you return it.

Re: Pontiac Steering Wheel Replacement Help

Thanks guys, that should help me get it off without breaking it. There is a place i found to send your wheel out and have it re-wrapped. http://www.dallassteeringwheel.com/index.htm I haven't called yet but i am thinking i may cut off the wrapping and refinish the metal and then send it to them. I would have the leather re-done in black if i do. May try to find a used wheel and keep mine on while the work is being done.

Still looking for options.

I would like to know if you can reuse the factory horn button with an aftermarket wheel? If so, i kind of like the Grant carbon fiber model. What do you guys think?

Also, here are some pics of the car for anybody who is interested. http://gtorockz.com/1987.html

Re: Pontiac Steering Wheel Replacement Help

I called Grant and their tech said they do not make a direct fit replacement steering wheel that utilizes the stock horn button for the 3rd gen Firebird.

They do make one for the 2nd gen but that wont help us out much.
