I'm not sure if I ever posted these, but here's some pics of how I modified the 4th gen ducting to fit my 91 Firebird.

Re: The 4th Gen Dash Swap Guide.

So I'm figuring i will do this swap this winter while my car is off the road. I have a 92 camaro. If i leave my gauges what dash would be best to use or are they all the same? And if i decide to swap my guages what goes with what and will work i got confused with the way you layed it out. (Camaro dash 93-96 works with ......gauges) and (camaro dash 97-02 works with .......guages) and (Firebird dash 93-02 works with......gauges). Sorry for the question being so long but i didn't know how to make it shorter .

Re: The 4th Gen Dash Swap Guide.

as far as im understanding yes......so i decided on getting either the 93firebird dash or the later years 2002 dash. What gauges do i need that will work in my 92 camaro with the firebird dash (I want gauges that bolt right in). And again if i do not change my guages will everything still work and look good or will there be gaps?

i'm pretty sure those are for the dome light. Ground 1 of them and run the other to the ground side of the lights. It doesnt matter what order you put those 2 wires in. I guess this guide still needs some work clearing things up lol

Someone else asked this too but what if you are using a carburetor engine is everything still going to work? What I am thinking is a 02 Firebird dash in a 82 Firebird.

Re: The 4th Gen Dash Swap Guide.

i have a 97 lt1 v8 gauge cluster i want to put in an 85 firebird with cable driven speedo and t700r4 auto. the speedo has the yellow box on the back that takes the cable reading and converts it to a signal for the ecu.

questions:
what signal does the 165 ecm receive from the optical pickup?
what ppm signal does the lt1 gauge need?
what ppm signal does the vss send?

Do i need a speed buffer box, or can i keep the cable speedo and run the lt1 speedo off the ppm wire from that?

I'm assuming you've figured this out by now but if not, heres the breakdown for the stock third gen dimmer switch wires (incase anyone else needs help)....

You are correct with the black as ground and white for the dome light power. The other two outer wires which are brown, and green with a white stripe go as follows.. Brown gets T'ed into the parking light circuit off the headlight switch. This supplies the dimmer switch with power when the lights are activated. The green with white stripe wire runs to a remote dimmer box right under the dash to the right of the steering wheel (looks like a small heat sink). This gives you more of a smooth range of dimming. There are 2 more wires coming off of the remote dimmer. One is solid green which is the output wire that dims anything you hook it too, and the other wire (brown) will also get plumbed into the brown parking light power wire off the headlight switch.

I have seen one car that had the a pillar trim cut to fit and I am attempting this myself as well. Others have fiberglassed the bottom portion onto the factory a pillar trim and I have also seen one with custom caps made for the gap.

Okay, possibly dumb question but after searching and everything, I figured I'd ask. Does anyone know the signal input on a 93-96 cluster for the speedometer? Is it just the GM 8K pulse or is it something else?

I too would like some info on this.

I've got a t700r4 with cable speedo going into an 85 gauge cluster that has the optical pickup that sends the signal to the ecm. I need to know if I can use the optical pickup on the back, and wire the 95-96 lt1 speedo input directly onto there and run the unit off that, or if I HAVE TO use a VSS?

Re: The 4th Gen Dash Swap Guide.

Has anyone came up with a good solution for the temp cable? I ve read that someone thought the 94-95 Camaro cable was a few inches longer than the Firebird cable or even the 97-02 Camaro cable.

Any solution to its mounting to the Heater door arm?

no you can actually use a harness from the LS1(98-02) firebird/camaro... the cluster connector is the same, i know because im using one. so is the headlights and radio and all other connectors.

the only variable in the swap is the cluster... the 98-02 clusters wont work without the 98-02 PCM since it gets the signals from it.. with an LS1 PCM to work, you either need the LSx engine or the EFIconnections.com 24x conversion.

Re: The 4th Gen Dash Swap Guide.

I have a 92 camaro rs 305 tbi with a 700r4, I want to do the dash and center console swap. What cluster do I need, what dash, and what center console. I'm sorry if this has been answered, but all these different pieces are confusing me. So I just am asking what pieces do I need.

Does anyone know if there is a way to run a 98 - 02 Firebird/Trans Am cluster on a stock third gen?... The 93 - 97 is ugly IMO.

the earlier clusters use analog sensor input like the factory 3rd gen setup, the later ones use the pcm serial bus instead. if running an LS1, you can choose either option.

Might pick up a non running 4th gen 1995 V6 just for the dash and console, looks auto but can manage some sort of 5 speed hole. Would I be able to put its dash and console into my 86 z28? With using youre info

It should work as any other 4th gen dash/console

Yea I figured it should, I really like the dash in the 3rd gens better, but I want a different gauge cluster.

Anyone wanna show their custom 3rd gen dash gauge clusters?

Theres been people on this site doing LS1 clusters in 3rd gen dashes for a while, just search it. I know you will have to mod the 3rd gen dash to fit it like cutting plastic and that sort of thing but its been done plenty of times.

This should point you in the right direction.

Some things.
  • When it comes to the GM speedo's its Pulses Per Mile. It can't be Pulses Per Minute because the output varies with speed.
  • You don't need to drill a hole in the chassis if the car started life as an automatic transmission (maybe even as a T5). There is already a Gromet forward of the ash-tray area under the radio pod.
  • Your location for the VSS wires might become problematic if the Trans mount breaks because the trans can crush the wires.

Other than that, good video. Doesn't apply to all swaps, but contains some good information.
1993 T56's are 11 pulses per revolution of the output shaft. 94 and up are 17 PPR.

Re: The 4th Gen Dash Swap Guide.

Idk if this will matter much at all, but i have the 84 berlinetta with the 2.8 v6, I'm swapping that with the 3.8 out of a 2001 firebird, both automatics, (please do not tell me to do the v8 swap instead, I have my reasons for the v6), at the same time, I'm wanting to install the dash out of the firebird as well... ...approx how much of this will apply to me and if any advice is available, I'd appreciate that as well.

Re: The 4th Gen Dash Swap Guide.

I am reading and I do understand that there are differences bet 93-96 Firebird/Trans Am and 97+ Dash. I got a 95 dash that the vinyl is damaged by the sun, and I cannot find a good one to replace it with. There are some from 97+ Firebirds available. Can they be swapped?? What is the differences between the two except the digital mileage reader and I think air bag is also different? And if I am to buy a new dash from the scrap yard, do I need to pick up something else to make it work? Any help would be appreciated...

Re: The 4th Gen Dash Swap Guide.

Anyone know if the gauge cluster has to be reflashed to the PCM? I'm having issue getting serial data to the gauges, so my RPM gauge doesn't work along with the rest associated with the serial data.

I tapped directly into the wire from the PCM and it's not working. The check engine light and other lights are working.

I got my dash and I'm about to start this. But how do you remove the passenger air bag?
