Removing the gauge cluster problems..
Removing the gauge cluster problems..
Ok, so first of ive read this:
https://www.thirdgen.org/gauges
and ive read how to do it in the haynes manual.
Ive tried getting at the speedo cable from above, there is no room up there with the dash pad off...
Ive tried from below, and i can barely reach the cable when i remove the fuse box and reach up that way and tap it with my pointer finger...theres no way i can get my had up there to unhook the cable..
has anyone with bigger hands like myself experienced this and maybe have some advice?
My temp gauge pegged to the top and i went to replace the sending unit and tested the green wire and it was grounded, so the sender wasnt the prob, and i couldnt trace the green wire because it went deep into the back of the engine, so i figured id rewire it.

I usually use a flat head screw driver with my smallish hands to depress the metal retainer clip.
This is from a Firebird, but the clip is probably the same. Once you can see what parts are involved it's easier to push the clip in to release it. Otherwise it's more of a random deal. You may need to release the tension a bit for it to come apart.

That picture helps me a lot... i just press down that wedge part sticking out right? and the cable pops out?
From the tutorial on here it made it sound like it was a connector like the fan switch on the block...
Thank you!

Yeah, if you pull on it, it's kind of like a Chinese finger cuff where it grabs it even more if you try to pull it apart. If you push it together and then push that clip in with a screwdriver it should let go. You might need to get a flashlight to see exactly how the clip is situated before attempting it.

Re: Removing the gauge cluster problems..
I've found it's easy to reach the cable at the speedo head if you drop the steering column.
Drop the column, remove the cluster speed nuts. Go from the engine compartment and push the speedo cable into the interior a bit.
Pull the cluster out a bit and then you can reach up through the column cut out and reach the cable attachment.
