T top bag zipper replacement?

Hey guys, got an 88 IROC. My T top bag is in great shape but the zipper needs replaced. Anyone know a good place to get this done? How bout a good place to buy a replacement zipper? I'm thinking maybe I could find a good tailor service or something to sew it in for me.

Any advice welcome

Re: T top bag zipper replacement?

That's about what it's going to take... The broken zipper is why I replaced my whole bag. The old one with the bad zipper is sitting right here next to me. If you can find a place, I would try to get a zipper off/for a piece of luggage, that happens to be METAL instead of cruddy plastic.

An upholstery place should be able to fix it for you. We sell the bags if you end up needing a new one.

Sometimes you can find them on Craigslist for a reasonable price if you dont mind used.

Re: T top bag zipper replacement?

the zip on my orig bag went south so i found a good used one on here and after a bit that zip went south as well. i went to a tent and awning co here and had them put a heavy black plastic zip in and its been great for the past 7-8 years. cost me $40 but considering i could buy another bag and it do the same its money well spent.

Re: T top bag zipper replacement?

i went to a sewing shop and bought a sleeping bag zipper that was 60" long IIRC.
i un-stitched the old zipper (not bad after a few beers... just meticulous)
then i used a simple sewing machine to sew on a new zipper.
all in all, it took me about 3 hrs and i learned how to use a sewing machine lol.
if you do it yourself, use a thicker needle. they should be able to help you... just make sure they know you are sewing thru leather.

i also opted to use a red stitch to make the stitching stand out. it goes well with my red interior.

finally, the zipper:
the sleeping bag zipper is much smoother than the original zipper and just as strong.
if you sew it on well, you will not have any problems and you get the bonus of having a buttery smooth zipper

Great tips guys. $40 would be cheap. Tent and awning company huh? Interesting

Red Dragon, was the sleeping bag zipper metal or plastic?

Re: T top bag zipper replacement?

metal.
i spent about $12 on the zipper and like $2 on a roll of suitable thread and a needle.
like i said, you need a thicker needle and thread to sew thru the leather

Re: T top bag zipper replacement?

Thanks. I'm assuming it's a copper colored zipper? Does it stand out? I'd love to have a black one. I don't know about sewing it myself. I might be better off to let someone skilled in that area sew it for me. I don't have a sewing machine lol.

Re: T top bag zipper replacement?

That would be perfect. I'm gonna have to go do some looking.

The stock one has two zipper handles so you can unzip half each way. Do you just have the one with the zipper you got? I guess that would be no big deal

Re: T top bag zipper replacement?

I did a google search and you can find just about any kind of zipper in any length you want. Now if I can just find someone good with a sewing machine, I'd be set.
