Overdrive. "O" around the D, like KNBlazer said. Best to use OD for most situations unless going down steep hills or needing extra power in short situations-- then use D, 2, etc. (engine will run higher rpms under load because your transmission isn't shifting into the highest gear.)

I have heard if your not going over 40 to use D but I find my car feels weird and restricted as if it's slightly pulling back or shimmying when you come to a stop. I also find that 700r4's just shift themselves if you try to use 1st or 2nd. Go out and try it for yourself. It will shift itself long before you put it into the next gear manually.

Re: drive or overdrive?
Personally I only use "Overdrive" getting on and traveling at highway speeds. "Drive" for around town. Just feels better to me.

No, I wouldn't think it would ever hurt. Most of the population only ever drives in OD. The transmissions are designed to work that way. Basically, in OD the transmission does all of the thinking for you of when to shift. The only time I could think of doing harm is if you were towing a trailer or anything heavy. Then, you aren't "supposed" to us OD especially if it's a heavy load.

Maybe its older 700r4s? I know for sure ive been in my car which is an 86 and a 88 iroc and they both shifted into 3rd before I wanted it to. I was not able to redline at all.

Re: drive or overdrive?
My old L98 saw 6500rpm once at the dragstrip because I had it in 1st. (can't remember why, D is just better)
