Piece in radio compartment

I'm trying to instal a Pioneer DEH-6200BT into my firebird, and am having a problem with fitment. The reason this is on the interior section is because I have a question about the piece that its hitting. There is a thick piece of plastic with a hole in it that the heatsink is making contact with (pictures to come soon). Almost looks like a vent or something. Can this piece be removed? I'm about to hacksaw the thing. thanks

it can come out. there's usually a nipple on the back of the stock radio that sits in that hole to give some additional support in the back. my 89 rs had a metal bar instead of the plastic, pulled out without any ill effect.

I wouldn't take it out... That thing is the center part of the console heater ducts. Only take it out if you want hot air blowing crud all over your new headunit during the winter or cold months (if you drive the car then).

I notched mine out for my stereo a long time ago and haven't looked back yet. Set the stereo brackets up so that the back of the HU just butts up against the duct, mark the duct with a marker, paint, or wite-out, and cut out a slot the height of your CD player all the way across and about half an inch deep. I used the same size hole for 4 CD players and they all fit fine, flush with where the old stereo sat. You can remove the duct to cut it, there's 2 screws on the bottom and 2 on the top. Just don't break the pod with the duct out... The duct is also a structural support for the frame of the pod.
