shift/gear indicator lens reborn!
Just thought i'd share one of my latest projects with the 3rg gen community... I got my shift/gear indicator lens looking brand new again using a 3M headlight lens restore kit. There are other brands too and prices range. The kit I got was 25 smackers but it did exactly what I wanted... and best of all I still have plenty of kit left to do my headlights, at least. My now nonexistent gear indicator lens looked horrible! The sun cooked it, like I'm sure many of yours too. It was cloudy all over pretty much, but the lens was intact and smooth. I had the shift indicator piece out, and handy, since I did a complete tear down/restore of my interior. So you need to take it out to do this fix. Also used a clamp (plastic a good idea), a fast electric drill and a fine mist water bottle. Also use the tape to cover the surrounding plastic!! When you're all done, wipe the lens with an oakly bag, or a microfiber cloth. I am amazed at the clarity and shine now. One word of caution, the lens is thin, so don't overdo it. Monitor how much plastic flakes off and keep an eye on the lens width frequently.
The picture is a bit blurry. I'll try to get a sharper snap. Picture shows a reflection in the lens.

Wow That turned out Excellent! I'm looking at doing my external lenses. Have you done any of your exterior lenses?

No, haven't done any external lenses yet. Will post when I do though. But I'll just say, my shifter lens looked like *** before, now it looks factory new. I've searched the web extensively and you can't buy a factory new lens a la Carté. The best you can do (which probably isn't true as of a few months ago) is buy the entire panel set, which obviously is a bad deal if you just need the lens piece.
Just do low pressure consistent strides from top to bottom, checking the lens every few strokes. The lens kit instructions will guide you with what to look for, for when its necessary to change sanding pads (to higher grit). Its a 4 or 5 step process.
