a/f autometer gauge

a/f autometer gauge
hey everyone.. i wanted to know whats involved if i install one of these autometer a/f gauges.... here is the one im looking at

im really doing it for looks but i hear you can tell when the car goes in closed loop with one of these... what do i need to do for this to work in my car... its a 88 gta, i also have a heated 02 sensor...

I have that gauge.I dont have the computer anymore,but if you still have your computer,the gauge sensor wire,(the one from the o2 sensor),splices into the wire from
the ecm.Should be a purple wire.I am going to go with a wideband a/f gauge.as the narrowband one is only of limited use for tuning purposes.

Correct me if Im wrong...but if you have an 88, its not a heated sensor is it? Single purple wire? If its a single wire, its not heated. I think it relys on the exhaust to warm it up before going into closed loop. Unless you mean you have a separate heated O2 sensor somehow rigged up?
My opinion of those A/F guages goes like this... They are pretty lights that bounce back and forth in your gauge pod. I ran one for a while before I went LSx, and it was fairly useless. It will tell you if you go way lean, or way rich, but you dont really have a good way of knowing how rich/lean it really is. After a while, you'll notice a change in its behavior when it goes into closed loop. You'll eventually get to recognize it and sorta know when the car goes into CL. That might be enough to fit your requirement..?
I rarely ever had just one LED lit at the same time. It was more like 3 or 4 next to each other sweeping back and forth.
Switching to a wideband gauge, with a standalone wideband sensor was one of the best upgrades I made. Not only is it SOOO much more useful, but it was less obnoxious without the lights zipping back and forth.
Again, just my opinion on those... Not saying dont buy it. Just want to make sure you know what youre getting.
As for your actual question...hooking that gauge up is very simple. Power, ground, and hook the sensor wire up to the O2 sensor wire. All there is to it.

It did come with a non heated sensor but I converted to a three wire heated sensor.... But I've been reading and the af gauge seems useless for what I'm doing... I was mainly getting. It because it looked cool.. But I will spend the money on something I can take use of...

The wideband looks really cool
And its MUCH more useful! Costs more, but I think they are worth the extra dough.
Good deal on swapping the sensor to 3 wire. Thats gotta help CL happen much quicker if nothing else.
