What is this hole for?
Hi there guys. Im gonna convert my hatch area to a covered hatch (the one with the roll up shade that in connected to the hatch lid and the tire wells). My IROC doesnt have the holes for the roll up curtain, nor does it have the cut-out notches for the catch on the lid. So anyways what are these holes used for?

Re: What is this hole for?

Re: What is this hole for?
Even a one piece fold down back seat should have two latches.
Always was a pain to get both unlocked at the same time
on my 84, 88, and 91

I think my one piece seat back has a latch on each side, I'll have to check tonight. Its a 1990, maybe they added a latch at some point?

The other one is for f-bodies that had the split back Rr seats.About the same time most 3rd gens came with both.
My 84 just has a passenger side striker.Which BTW, i never understood why GM put the damn thing there & not the dr. side. Its like fords with the fuel cap on the passenger side!

Re: What is this hole for?
Ok guys,
. Here are a few pictures of my interior. On my 86, there is the striker on the passengerside. I checked to see if there was a hole on the driverside but there isnt. There is also no evidence of a possible latch on the driverside. My fold down rear seat is the one piece. So here is my rear panels.

Re: What is this hole for?
A one piece rear seat would only have one latch (on the pass side) not two.
If you want to use the one piece rear, just add a striker bolt to the drivers side and leave it as is. The striker bolt should be a torx head.

I think I'm just gonna make the holes for the hatch curtain. I got a dremel tool kit. Besides, if I make the holes myself, ill save some money.

Re: What is this hole for?
My recently acquired '89 RS has the one piece rear seatback with two latches as well. When I stumbled across this feature, I just scratched my head and looked elsewhere for something to fix.

Re: What is this hole for?
You are the MAN!!!!! I pull away my driverside panel and there it was, a circle indicating the hole for the curtain. But since the curtain has some slack, is'nt it ok just to cut out the "stenciled" hole? Also did you have to replace the whole lower glass panel that has the 2 notches to hold the curtain? Here is what I found in my IROC.

Sorry it took a while to reply.
The distance probably isn't going to make enough of a difference to take up the slack. The spring that retracts the shade is probably weak and that's what you'd need to look at there. The reason I took the time to use the original hole positions is to line them up with the two screw holes on the metal support bracket in the image below:

I had a set of later model plastics installed and they never fit right because the holes didn't line up with the metal mounts behind them. The panels would bind and at first I didn't understand why. Then when I measured the two I noticed that the holes weren't in the same place. One thing I could have done is use the holes imprinted on the back, install the receivers and drill new holes into the metal mounts, but I didn't know if the mounts would be in the same place (Ie. have no metal to drill into) and I didn't want to drill new holes in the metal anyways.
The rear plastic piece on the hatch also has a metal strip behind it for support so you would either need a new plastic piece or add the metal bracket to the one you have. Mine already had the curtain, I just added later model side plastics that didn't have the holes.
To locate the hole position, measure from two points to the near end of the holes. Then add the radius of the hole to draw an arc on the new piece (you can see the marker line in the first pic). Then from the other position, do the same, and where the arcs cross is the center point to drill. What I originally did was measure both edges of the holes and subtracted the radius hence the pics below. Just extra steps though. * Also, before yo do anything check to make sure the metal brackets are actually there or you won't have anything to mount the receivers to.

Hope that helps.

I dont have that nifty measuring tool. What is the actual size of the hole so that I can know exactly what size of hole drill to get. Do yo urecall the measurment Scorpner?
Yep that's it!

Re: What is this hole for?
I just found this thread. Man what a life saver. I installed mine on my 85 Z28 and I never noticed the metal brace on mine behind the cutout on the plastic. So now when the ice and snow melts I can now make it a solid mount. It looks like I may need to extend some kind of home made braket to screw in the end caps. Thanks for posting this, I have been looking for just this info.

Yeah, I know what you are saying, I just found a 1foot square piece of aluminum that I can cut down for just that. I didnt think of rivits, I was going to use a couple of nuts and bolts with lock washers and thread lock compound.

Yup yup. I may just go to Lowes and get a piece of galvanized sheet metal that is called "tin shingle" in roofers terms. When you get your project going, take pictures. I'm curious on how you will execute the project.

Re: What is this hole for?
I finally took off the panels for the rear hatch curtain installation. There are no metal strips to screw in the cups but not to worry. I bought 2 plates and a metal strip so that I can have something to mount to. So now I just gotta wait for my neighbor to come home so that I can measure his mounting holes for the cups. He has a blue green 92 RS. Ill keep everyone posted with my progress. Also I have an interesting story about what I found inside the panels of the hatch area.
