Time to fix the headliner, Go aftermarket or repair original?

This spring I will be fixing (or replaceing) my headliner which is in great confition except that it is saging. The material is in great condtion with no ripes or stains. My issue is should I have the original repaired or go with an aftermarket headliner. Through reading the forum it seems the aftermarket liners are a hassle to get to stay up without the addition of the over head console. However, when I when I inquired at the interior shop, which has done a ton of work for both my self and father over the years, he suggested going aftermarket as the original could be reglued but would likely sag again as the headliner backing ages. Any insight on this ?

P.S. My formula is a hard-top car if that makes any difference.

if the headliner's in good shape and you feel up to the challenge of recovering it, go for it. do a single layer of fiberglass cloth and resin just to beef things up a bit. make sure to scrape off all foam or else you'll see it when you go to recover it. it's a big piece, so you're going to have to take your time to make sure you don't get any wrinkles when laying down the new covering

Let the Reupholsery Shop do the work. It will be 100% better then any DIY job. Went the Pro shop route 12 yrs ago and still like the Factory original.

I have heard on the hardtops the aftermarket headliners are pretty good it's the t-top ones that can be a pain, but if yours is in good shape there's no reason why you couldn't try to have it recovered and as Dan said try a layer of fiberglass over it and you should be good to go.

I have an aftermarket T-top headliner that is miles better than the fiber board original. ABS plastic, won't get damaged by any moisture. 12 years and still looks better then the original.

You can always use some velcro on the back of it to hold it to the roof... but your sun visors, light housing and rear panel should be plenty good enough to hold it in place.

go to this thread and I have a picture of an installed new headliner from stockinteriors.com

You could also ask 1a, a site sponsor if they carry them and are willing to meet the price and throw the business their way.

Re: Time to fix the headliner, Go aftermarket or repair original?

Thank you everyone for your quick responses. I will be pulling the headliner this weekend and will take it from there. I prefer reusing the original however I will know more once I remove it from the car and can get a good look at the backing. The car itself is in great condition inside and out (61K miles) and I am trying to keep it as original as possible. I will keep you all posted, and thanks again.

In Florida, headliners don't last as long. Mine crumbled in my hands but I am impressed with the replacement headliner.

Besides age, tobbaco smoke kills the glue on headliners too.

Mine is crumbling as we speak lol. You can literally just poke a spot in the hole and pieces will just flake off and fall out.

I like going down the road and seeing a headliner draping down on the passenger's head! Two more posts and you'll have "senior" status!

I relined my headliner and it turned out great. I got the headliner material from joanns fabric and the spray adhesive from autozone. I will have to redue it though because i had to much glue in one spot and it soaked through. others wouldnt notice it but it bothers me.

I'm confused, it turned out great but you have to re-do it? Not sure how that is great. I hate doing things twice.

lol thats about where mine is at, it started coming loose in just one spot near the passenger side seat belt retractor but literally within another month or two it was sagging all over and now rests on my head. Talked with my interior guy this morning and we decided to restore the original headliner because the backing is in good shape and the material is flawless, so we will see how it holds up just being reglued.

It baffles me how the headliner in my super clean low(er) mile formula will sag but on the other hand my 90 S10 extended cab's headliner is still in great shape with no hint sagging anywhere after 180K miles. They seem to be of the same construction and material.

Tobacco smoke will cause it to fall. The original owner might have smoked in it?

Re: Time to fix the headliner, Go aftermarket or repair original?

What I meant was it turned out great except for one small spot, and that was do to my own error. I applied to much spray adheasant and when i was pressing the headliner material to the fiberglass it soaked through. So ther is one small hard spot that would probably never be noticed by anybody but myself. I am somewhat of a perfectionist so I will be redoing it when time permitas. So basically as long as you dont overn gluen you will have a brand new looking headliner for under $40.
