I know this topic has been covered in the past, but I was wondering if there may be something new that someone has come across for this.

I picked up a clean set of black carpets today at the junkyard for $12.00. They cleaned up nicely, and I will replace the jute backing with some from Home Depot, but the color is faded slightly. Is there something that can be used to refresh the black color that will not wear off easily? I have concidered using SEM paint, as it did a wonderful job on my interior panels, but I am afraid of getting that "rough" feeling on the carpet.... or how can I correct/avoid the "rough" paint feeling in my carpet...

 

how bad is slight fade if its not bad you will not notice it that much in the car.

This guy says "No, the dye does not make the carpet rough. That is where the nylon brush comes in. The brush is a MUST to keep the carpet soft and to lay down even coats of the dye.", it IS a bmw forum.... They're sometimes picky right?

Myth #1 you cannot dye plastic parts.

your carpet is plastic fiber.

Anything you use will be nothing but paint with a flex agent in it.

Just so you know.

Ok and as such you want to use a stiff brush while you paint the carpet to keep the fibers lose, and member a carpet fiber has 4 sides, like when you steam clean the carpet in your house, you go criss cross, do the same with your painting to make sure you get all sides and get no varation in color.

I did that when I turned my nasty grey carpet black, It helped to hang it over a railing, as it opened up the fibers more.

Turned out great and has stayed nice.
Since yours is already black, it should be even easier.

 

Was it as dark as stock? or darker? How has it held up? I looked in your thread and didn't see any of black carpet so you must not have updated or put it in yet.

I did it was back in 02-03 and its still nice.

It was nasty, what I did for a test, was cut a small square from a place not needed, soaked it down with paint, then once dry took a sanding sponge to it to simulate feet wear and it didn't come less I really went at it, beyond normal foot traffic.

 

That carpet looks far better than i would of thought, For some reason i was expecting splotches and a non uniform color, Almost gives me hope on trying to dye my tan carpet black.

 

If you use some fancy stuff it should be even better, as don't tell anyone as I don't want to get flack but I just use 99cent cheap black spray paint, but don't tell anyone [the test piece sold me on that money savings]

 

Your carpet is "dyed" black, by using spray paint???

 

So I would assume either VHT or SEM paint should be used? I was leaning towards SEM as I have already used it on my interior plastics with great results.

I want to know how the carpet was dyed with Rit...

I remember back a few years ago there was an article in a Radio Control Car Action mag about using Rit to dye PLASTIC R/C car bodies. I wish I hadn't lost that mag because that article could have come in handy quite a few times now... And getting black carpet is proving to be highly cost ineffective (and difficult to find), especially with my factory gray main carpet being in fine shape other than the nasty stains in it (hatch carpet is worn out and is going to be replaced if I can ever find one).

 

OK you can dye plastic if its soft or melted, the Rit dye method used boiling hot water to soften it up so the dye could enter the surface layer.

But anything you buy in a can and just spray on plastic, is no dye.

With Rit on carpet , you just put in a spray bottle and apply. Brush it in. Let it dry. May have to rinse afterwards. Doenst stick to rubber to well.

 

I do realize that. Why do you think I put quotes around the word. Dyed or painted.....Same results.

Did you use spray paint to change the color of your carpet? Does that wording make the question any better?

 

autozone has the rustoleum automotive product line now and the carpet and vinyl dye's work great from my experience.

 

I know this is an old thread but what brand of cheap paint did you use, also was it flat or gloss? That many years of not wearing off is a shining endorsement in my book. I was thinking I would powerwash the carpet really well, let it dry, use a carpet brush while its still wet to really work it in. Maybe a spray of adhesion promoter for plastics would make it even more bulletproof...

You can dye carpet with rit without boiling water. Your spilled coke, kool-aid, or coffee stains it correct?
