How do you remove the shifter ****?

'84 Z28. Auto trans 4 speed w/OD. I have a ball for a shifter with a button on top. What is the trick? I would rather not buy a specialty tool if possible. I just want to clean up the shifter plate to be brighter, but I can't get it off of the shifter due to the ****.

Re: How do you remove the shifter ****?

there is a pin that holds the shifter to the shaft. Just need to pry it out witih a small screwdriver or somethign you can get under it and pull it out...much like a staple in a pile of papers.

Its located on the front side on the seam about half way down.

I don't have a seam. Solid plastic ball w/solid plastic button. Ball spins freely. I think it is stock.

Re: How do you remove the shifter ****?

91 shifter has the staple in front you must remove to free the ****. The 84 is held on by a circlip. First you pull straight up on the button and it comes right out. After that you can see by looking down in the circlip which is easiest removed with circlip pliers to fit in the little holes. After you take that out the **** comes straight up and off. Your **** spins if the tab or tabs that locate it in place on the shaft are worn down or broken off.. If you can't find a replacement and need one, I have a single tab one with good button and circlip around here somewhere I can make you a deal on. LMK, Henry

Re: How do you remove the shifter ****?

i have the same issue, but my camao is a 89 RS. I've taken out the middle plastic one that pushes down, and tried to twist it out, but it wouldn't turn or budge. I tried pulling it out and that didn't work. How can i know if it has a clip, pin or staple? Please help, thank you.

Re: How do you remove the shifter ****?

89 has the clip in the front part of the ****. Use a hook or small screwdriver in the slot to remove clip. **** will pull straight up.

Re: How do you remove the shifter ****?

If its a automatic with the leather covered ball head it will
either (depending on year) have a staple in the front lower part
of the ball OR have snap rings on the shifter shaft under the top
cap.

If it has the staple............ Pull the staple and pull it off.

IF NOT....... you have to remove the release cap on top of
the ball and take out the snap ring then pull it off.
