how do I remove the dash guage cluster

I had a temp guage that pegged 12noon and wouldn't come down. It was working fine until I switched from a mechanical to elec water pump. My car is carburated and the temp sensor is running from the front of the manifold next to the radiator hose connection. No it is not on the side of the block (std), that has a threaded plug in it between cyl 1 & 2 on driver side. I figure I have shorted it somehow, but couldn't trace it down. All the other gages looked like they were working.

So I removed the plastic front to the guage cluster and the bezel, then the vairous screws holding the panel. When I begin to pull it out, it is being held by the speedo cable and possibly some wire connectors? Also, after doing this, none of the guages work... so I am thinking something may be loose on the back of this cluster?

I checked the fuses and don't see anything blown.

Does anyone have a link to show how to remove the cluster?

Re: how do I remove the dash guage cluster

are you trying to swap in a new cluster to see if the temp gauge with that one works?

if so your old temp gauge should just unplug from the cluster its socket-ed in like a plug in the wall , you wont have to take the entire cluster out

ive never taken my entire cluster out so i cant help any further than that

All but the speedo are plug and play as has been mentioned. No need to remove the cluster. Should you choose to remove the cluster, note the following link:

Re: how do I remove the dash guage cluster

thanks everyone. I am out-of-town til Monday. I appreciate the feedback.

I don't plan to replace the cluster, unless I have to.

Originally only the temp gage stopped working (pegged vertical) and I thought that was the only problem, maybe the temp wire grounded somewhere, but couldn't find it. But after a day of trying to look under the dash, none of them appear to work any more, so I am thinking that maybe there is a main plug on the back that has come loose. So I expect to pull the cluster to check it.

Thanks for the link which is perfect for getting it out. I had seen the link on another thread, but it was broken (must have been some typo). This one work

I'll update once I get it apart and see what I have.

Re: how do I remove the dash guage cluster

Well, I got the gauge cluster out. and sure enough one of the wire plugs was not connected to the cluster. I plugged it back in and whala! ... Most everything worked. The termostat is still sickly. It was moving up to temp and then instantly dropped all the way down (cold). I then played around with the temp sensor and it came back to where it should be and then dropped cold again.... So I guess I don't know for sure if it is the guage or the sensor (I am awful with electricity)
