How to replace console lid in trans am?

How to replace console lid in trans am?
Iv gotten up until the part where I have to unhook the spring from the arm of my current torn console lid. I just dont wanna break the spring cause it looks like a pain to replace. Do I just get some needlenose and pull on the end of the spring?

you will have a hard time breaking the spring. dont worry so much about that. but i believe one side of the springs goes into plastic?

....you mean my center console lid is supposed to have a spring?
I should've known something was up when I saw a piece of plywood attached to the underside of the lid with sheetmetal screws...

There is a spring which attaches to a serrated u clip which mounts onto a plastic lip inside the console. The other end attaches to the bar which extends from the console lid.To remove it you get a long flat blade screwdriver and put it through the top down into the clip and push it down. This releases it from the plastic. Unscrew the ashtray and you can access the clip and remove it from the bar. Install is the reverse.
