Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
Thanks Hawk! Great write up! I have a 1982 TA with 24K actual miles on it that has some minor fading to the tops of the plastic in the hatch area. Everything is complete, nothing broken and nothing is rotten. The car has always been garaged, however the original owner's garage has a window, and over 30 years the sun would shine into the back glass a little in the afternoon and faded the plastic. I am thinking about using the SEM product and doing the whole interior to ensure a complete match. Plastic, seats, carpet, everything that is burgandy. The car is going to be a trailer queen show car and will be kept as original as possible. I will disassemble the whole interior and prep everything as recommended. What are some thoughts this idea? Thanks, Charles

Charles - I think you are going to have a heck of a time matching the red interior with a stock color from SEM. You are better off going to a paint shop with an unfaded panel and having them custom mix a match to your panel. It would be a shame to have the wrong color interior in a car that is a perfect example of what someone bought in the Pontiac showroom in 1982. Just make sure your panels aren't dry rotted. I thought mine were just faded, but I wound up replacing most of them.

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
The SEM burgandy is almost a perfect match. I bought a can and sprayed in on an old plastic panel from a junk car to color check it, and it was nearly a perfect match to the unfaded plastic in my Trans AM. The panels are not dry rotted. They just have some color loss in areas where there was direct sunlight. The surface of the panels are still slick and NOT chalky. Panels are flexable and not scratched. The quality control for the colors of the plastic used in 1982 was poor, and there was significant variation between batches of parts. Often cars had mismatched panels from the day they were sold new, and the 82's had a reputation of fading very fast, espically the red and burgandy colors. That is one reason that I thought of dying the whole interior. To get a perfect match between the seats, plastic, and carpet. The PMD fabric seats are a slightly different color from the plastic and from the carpet. Removing trim panels reveals that the seat fabric is not faded. It was a poor match from the factory. Dying the whole interior will match everything perfectly.
http://search.yahoo.com/r/_ylt=A0oG7...bapspaint.com/
but they matched the Carmine perfect.

the plastic with carpet. Pre formed and cut carpet kits for cargo plastic are
still available and will help preserve that plastic.
Something to consider when it is difficult to match plastic color.

Charles - the mismatched panels is the beauty of the cars from the 80's. The total lack of quality control is what gives the cars their character.
Seriously though - I am not sure if you are looking to dye the seats also. I know they don't match exactly, but I think you should leave them as is. Cloth never matches perfect with the trim in any car.

Covering everything with carpet is a great idea for a car that is modified, however this car is going to remain stock.

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
I was refering to the member who covered all of his plastic panels with grey speaker box carpet. Looks great, but no where near stock.
Both of my Trans AM's have the factory carpet covering the plastic panels. The 82 is faded on the top strip of exposed plastic around edges. The car also has the hatch shade option, so it is just the edge of the panels that are in direct sunlight. The tops of the rear armrest faded some also, and the seat belt guides. Overall it is not bad, however if were all matching it would look perfect. The tops of the back seats show no fading at all, and match the fabric on the underside of the seat bottoms that have never seen direct sun. The color used in the plastic parts in 1982 was not stable, espically the dark colors like the burgandy.

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
I was wondering if this process would work if I wanted to change the color of my plastics as well. I was wanting to change from red to black and I was wondering if I would be better off trying to change the color of mine or buy a set of black plastics and restore it. I would imagine that I would be able to change the color with some extra coats of dye, but I was just wondering if anyone had tried to change colors before.

This is some great information. My 86 has Carmine Red interior. I am actually wanting to change the color to black of the same year. Do we have anyone that made a drastic color change like that?
I understand the concerns about scratches and the old color showing. It looks like these products are durable and can withstand hits and such.
BTW - - Only found this by searching!

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
Thanks OP for all the info... I was about the order paint and decided to give that wipe new stuff you see on TV a try. Let me just say I'm glad I did as soon as I applied it the Carmine red POPPED and all the minimal fading was gone, one of my rear panels under the hatch was to far gone for the product but it definitely saved me tons of prep and paint time. It's worth giving it a shot especially since it's only 20 bucks and super easy to apply.
Hope this info helps a few of you out.
Good luck

Bought a small bottle at Walgreens for $20 and saved on the shipping/waiting.
Figured it was worth a shot since I was going to paint anyways. It fumes up pretty good but after 5-10 mins it was all gone and I went for a joyride. I will snap a few pictures before and after to show you the difference. See if I can sneak away to the garage for a few...

Untreated

Treated

Best example of untreated and treated.

It's not brand new but it definitely brought some color back and looks better than armor all...

Looks pretty good...I've used it on my sail panels on my Avalanche with some good results. I will say preparation of the surface is key. Any oil grease dirt etc. And the results are streaky.

The paint brand is PPG - Deltron 2000 DBI interior paint. Baps is great because they are a wiz at mixing you up a perfect match. Wear a respirator when you spray it. It is no joke.
Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
$118 for 3 cans!!!! Even the cheap way aint cheap
Is 3 cans enough to do the entire interior?
And does anyone have any pictures of how close the new paint is to the original?

3 cans are enough with about 1/2-3/4 can left for later touch ups.
Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
Thats hard for me to tell how well it matches the original since myne have been repainted with OTHER paint for 7 years. In your opinion how close of a match is it?
Sexy interior by the way
Also has anyone used thirdgen ranchs trim interior carpet kit? If so hows the quality

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
You have to get ALL that paint off. Use brake fluid, soak it for a few days and it will come off. Take a look at the back of one of the panels (the kick panels are a good spot) to see what color it is supposed to be. No matter what you wind up using, you have to get all the old paint off. If you don't need an exact match, check out SEM color coat. It works great, and there are colors that will probably come close to your interior. It is only about 11 bucks a can.
Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
I think im gonna go with the ppg if it matches oem the best. Trying to get it as original as possible, worth the money. As for getting thenold paint offnill get it a shot, might buy a cheap used set instead
