Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
I finally got ahold of a cargo plastic with cargo lid provision 'i already had a
cargo lid from a parts car'. The lid was tan and the plastic was charcoal.
Scrubbed them both up, sprayed them with adhesion promotor then the SEM
dye. Installed new carpet in the lid. I would have to remove the back part of
the exhaust and fuel tank in order to drill some holes for the cargo lid hinge.
Instead i am welding some studs from the inside. It should be ok since there is
no stress on the lid. Mockup...

What color SEM paint did you buy? I bought SEM landau Black, and it's a semi gloss, But almost looks too glossy, Was thinking of trying satin Black.

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
I had tried this with some adhesion promoter I had and black plastic paint and after one week I tried scratching it and it was fairly hard to scratch. Then because of the piece it was on I tried twisting it and it still stuck but did have stress cracks. Even with the stress cracks it did not flake off. My idea was to see how it stood up to horrible abuse on this piece of miscellaneous ford plastic that I had. I will do it later if or when I need to.

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
Hey guys....can`t believe this thread is still going! Where are the sticky police?
Wanted to let you know tried some of the adhesion promoter and the lacquer on the mother of all tests for durability, a lexan RC car body! I could actually fold the lexan completely in half making a crease, flex it back to its original shape, and still was unable to scratch the paint off, even after a couple weeks of drying time. The lexan would actually tear before it would let go of the paint! It should hold up to our interior pieces no problems. How is everyone else making out?

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
I heard some stories about the bulldog adhesion promoter.. What is the best one? Camaro Central sells the "OER" brand adhesion promoter for a good deal (16.95$).
Also, there's a place that sells PPG paint that said they would need the paint code from the car, not the RPO code that GM uses for its interior paint colors. I'm going to call GM today to see if they have it but if they don't, this place said that they can't make the color of my interior because the car is too old (86) and it probably won't be in their catalogs. My interior color is the light saddle tan (beige) from an 86 camaro (pics of it are in my sig).. I believe they used this color from 85 to 87, does anyone know the RPO code for this color?

Hellz_Wings,If you can get the RPO codes for you interior,BAPS Paints will match the code you give them. They use PPG Paints for GM car colors. There is a few members and I that have used BAPS to restore our interior plastics. They were dead on, on my Carmine.

I plan on doing some seat belt sleeves very soon. I have a local paint place that I go to for my exterior and that's spot on. What should I ask to get the interior color spot on? I also have the dark carmine in my '89

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
I am almost done with my plastics. Aside from the fact that I had to replace most of them due to dry rot, they painted up nice with the paint I got from Baps. A lesson learned. A faded panel = dry rot = garbage.
I plan on buying extra carpet by the yard when I get my molded interior carpet and using that on the plastics. The backing on them is made to be molded with heat. So I am going to heat it up from the back with a heat gun and use my crappy interior plastics to mold it to. I haven't decided what to glue it with, but I am either going to use a hot glue gun or gorilla glue. I will let you guys know how it works out in a few months.
Here is one of the panels I painted with PPG paint:

I painted this with SEM paint. It has 3 coats of Landau black and 2 coats of low luster clear.

Overall, the SEM paint is easier to work with and more forgiving to what the panel's condition is to start out with. But they both finish really nice.
I think the key to the durability is definitely like Hawk312 said - the prep and the adhesion promoter.

Those look terrific 82,are you painting your panels before you carpet or are you going to do what Hawk did and tape off the carpet. That guy Raceface used rubber glue for his.

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
I have all the carpet taken off my old panels. The replacement panels I bought didn't have the carpet on them. I was going to reuse them on the replacement panels, but I decided to try and put new stuff on them. I painted the whole panel, even where the carpet goes. To tell you the truth - I think it looks better without the carpet. But I am trying to restore the interior as close to original as possible, so I am going to put the carpet on again.

Yea,I would keep it original also, try and trace the carpet from the old carpet pieces.

It's in the shop. The paint is stripped, and the painter is taking care of the minor body work it needs. I really should start a thread with some pics, but I want to wait until I get it back, and then I can put everything up all at once.

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
Called GM vintage car department and asked the guy about the RPO code for my camaro and asked for my paint code and he said that it won't give the interior paint code.. He said that for the interior you have to "paint to match".. I told him that other people said otherwise and he said "No, there is no interior paint code".. This is the guy at GM telling me this LOL.. So I guess I have to bring a panel to a local shop that sells PPG paint and then have them paint it to match?

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
I tried matching mine to the paint code and it was off. I had to send them a panel to match the paint.
As far as clear coat - it is optional. I just had this discussion with the manager from Baps today. He said that if you want to clear it, you must do it within 24 hours of spraying it, or you have to scuff and respray. If you use the car every day and think you might want the extra protection, then it might be worth it. I am going to clear my door sills and console bottom. I think the rest I am going to leave as is.
I asked him what type of clear to use and he said it did not matter. I think the SEM clear is good stuff. Low luster should give it the sheen it needs.

Joe - I am curious about that paint. I looked it up on the net and PPG Delstar seems to be some sort of acrylic enamel. Did they tell you it was okay to use that on plastic?
I think you should be OK as long as you use an adhesion promoter. As far as clearing it, you should probably ask the guys where you bought it what is compatible with it.

I dont see why not.. I gave him a piece of plastic that broke off of my original and he matched it up perfect and kept asking me what I was using it for. I also picked up sandpaper and that adhesive promoter as well. I also have some clear coat laying around as well just in case. It should work alright.

The color codes may be the same, but those are 2 different PPG products. The one he bought is an enamel based paint. I am not sure if it is any better or worse then what we used, but it is definitely different. I think PPG Deltron DBI is a urethane based paint.

Yeah they were black. I was worried at first because it kept showing through but after a few coats it went away. I didnt put a clear on them because this paint made them a little glossier than the original..but not by much. The color is also close but its a little darker..but that should match up to my leather perfectly, so I dont care

I noticed they were a tad darker, once you put them back, you won't even see them.
Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
I want to get the SEM Landau Black to do my carpet and plastic. From what I gather. Will the [SEM Colorcoat - Landau Black] work for both carpet and plastic and still look pretty close to stock?
I just dont want there to be a big diff from my other black pieces
Should I use the adhesion promoter on carpet also?
Thanks for the thread, amazing!

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
If you are doing the dash and console pieces, the Landau black will be fine. But I think it might have too much shine for the rear plastic trim pieces. It should also work for the carpet, but you need to brush it as you do it, or the carpet will get stiff. Don't use adhesion promoter on the carpet.
This is Landau black on my center console top.

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to
That black looks great on the console, does that match your black dash? If so, I have a console I'll be doing also, so I'll buy some SEM Landau black for that and the carpet.
Now for the rear plastic, What does anyone recommend for them? I'd get get the interior GM paint code mixed somewhere if thats the only choice I have, but I've got some Rust-O-Leum Satin universal paint I'd like to try, but I'm scared it wont match my door trim pieces and dash.
What's a nice alternative for a close match? Thx people
