Recovering Dash

I am attempting to repair my junk Camaro dash. I am going to go and get some stretch vinyl material and permatex headliner adhesive. My question is for those that have done this before. What did you do regarding the speaker grilles and defrost area? I was thinking about using some wire mesh in the area, but am unsure.... Not much on here regarding this....

Re: Recovering Dash

I was going to recover mine, I just cut the grills out since they were cracked, but I decided I didn't want to go through the trouble, esp since the damn thing is heavy, I'm just going to get a one piece fiberglass dash(not just a dashpad mind you) that weighs like 1/3 what the stock pad does, but I'm also a weight ****, and my cracks on my pad were furled upwards, I don't think I could've gotten everything flush, it just cracked more when I tried grinding them down too.

Re: Recovering Dash

I've seen several people on here try to recover their dash, it never looks good. Just put one of the carpeted dash covers over it until you can get an OER replacement.

Re: Recovering Dash

I'm in the middle of doing a new dash for my car. I got another dash pad from junk yard. I stripped everything off it, and fiber glasssed it. Put new foam and covering it with rolled and pleated black to match rest of interior. I'm going old school look.I put black pipping with vinyl attached around speakers and defrost front vent. The vinyl attached to pipping dropped down along side of grill so would lay flat and gluded it in place. Same thing with defrost vent. I closed the small defrost vents. I drilled holes through speaker grills attachment points (4) put in long screws counter sunk screw heads bondo on the head and repainted the grills black. Made spacers from plastic pipe to raise the grills to meet flush with dash pad. I still have a little more work to do where it wraps over the front and tucks under. At this point not happy with how it is rolling over front. I may have to make the front thicker to get it to smooth out.
I made a cardboard templet of dash had a shop sew me the rolled and pleated vinyl, I'm doing everything myself.
