Dome Light Assembly

I'm doing a full restore on the interior of my 1985 IROC including replacing the headliner. The car is a T-Top and is equiped with the console that goes in between the two. I really don't like the looks of the console and was not planning on replacing it, but it houses the dome light.

I don't know if I can just take a dome light out of a car that wasn't equiped with the overhead console and install it? Or if someone makes a universal aftermarket dome light assembly? I searched and I can find endless sites that sell bulbs but not the entire light assembly.

Thanks in advance for any info or advice.

Re: Dome Light Assembly

Wait im confused. Do you mean the Dome light thats in the overhead? The little round swivel one? Or the square one behind the overhead? If you mean that one,you can just get one out of a car at the junkyard and install it.
The white wire is your ground, when you open the doors the door switch will connect the wire to the body completing the ground.
Your orange wire is constant hot, and your white wire is your ground wire when you flip the switch. Or what would be simplist is if you have Map lights on your rear view mirror. You could just tap into that and wire it

Re: Dome Light Assembly

My car has a console like the attached picture - it has a swivel light and a square built-in dome light. I don't like this, I'd rather go with just a square dome light.

Re: Dome Light Assembly

You'll have to get a new headliner too. There are holes cut for the wiring if the OH console is original.

Re: Dome Light Assembly

If you're replacing your headliner, all you need is the dome light from a car without the console. When you get the dome light, grab the two posts that screw into the roof which the domelight mounts to. When you remove the console, the two rear screws are where the posts go.

If you want to get tricky, you could remove the entire console harness, and domelight harness from the donor car and just unplug the old one from the car, and the new one back in. Both harnesses go from the dome light forward to the windshield, then down the drivers side A pillar where they plug into a distribution block. No cutting, splicing, etc required. It'd be easy if you have the headliner out, just take your time and it's a cake walk.

You can also sell your old console for $100 give or take, maybe more.
