Swap 89 carpet with 90-92 carpet
Swap 89 carpet with 90-92 carpet
(not another aftermarket carpet install)
So I'm seriously considering swapping my 89 trans ams' gray interior with my 91 firebirds' black interior. I think the black would look better/'pop' more than the near standard red/gray. Although some of the black plastics would need restored.. which means restoring all of it.. (hawk way)*As for the black carpet, how should I/did you clean it?*
I'm mostly concerned with the STOCK carpet compatibility. I've searched and it seems that the 90-92 floor pans are different from earlier models. I'm wanting to do a straight swap. Will this work? (swapping in 91s' carpet in place of the 89s') Why would i want a aftermarket when i have a precut/preformed rug!
The 89s' final int appearance is my focus, and thanks to hawks write up I'm excited to give my car the new car look (has the feel :)
However I didn't find much discussion on deeper scrapes in plastics. Will trying to work it out cause me to loose texture? (ref to cargo area after I would *repair/repaint damage) Am i better off replacing deeply scuffed black plastics with *the grays just sprayed *black?
Also since carpet is coming out, what are some options/recommendations for under carpet insulation, I have some thoughts, but what have you used/liked best?
Alterior motivation; my fan control/radio 'pod' bracket is broken on the top left side, pod dangles/hits center console. (89 TA) which needs to be removed for repair/carpet install anyway.. (heard it a pita to uninstall that pod- tips if u have em!)
Thanks a lot guys!

Re: Swap 89 carpet with 90-92 carpet
carpet resellers send you the same exact carpet for the 91 as they do for the 89 so I'm not sure where you got the notion that 3rd gens are different???
Have you priced out stockinteriors or 1A to see their pricing? You may just want to go with new rug; what a difference it makes and both places sell the same rug (the only rug)

Re: Swap 89 carpet with 90-92 carpet
Search yeilded the differences in the floor pans.
Yes i'm sure carpret resellers have aftermarket rugs that are made to fit all years, that's why they're aftermarket, not what i'm talking about.
So I haven't priced new rugs, no need, mine is fine, just needs cleaned. There are PLENTY of posts on aftermarket rug installs.
I need to know how the STOCK 91 rug will match up with the 89, thanks. Besides, with any luck, i won't have to cut a single hole!
