installing new wiring harness, and taking dash apart.
i'm in the process of installing a new wiring harness, due to my harness before is just so rigged up that i was having more and more electrical issues until the car finally wouldn't fire anymore last september.

so i am going to remove the dash, and it looks like it's possibly riveted in on the bottom? am i correct or are they just clips?
strange question, but i was removing my headlight switched and noticed that it looks like it has some sort of little light above the dimmer wheel. is that what it is? i've never seen it work before. can i replace a bulb or something?

I don't believe there's any rivets...I had mine entirely pulled out several inches when I swapped the heater core (before I found out there was a way to do it without removing the dash).

5 7mm screws at the top, 2 10mm screws at the bottom, in the corners under the kick panels. Also need to drop the steering column because the dash is pinned between the column support and the steering column bracket that's welded to the body, 2 13mm nuts. Also need to undo the C100 from the body and unplug the C207 and C208 under each side of the dash. And don't forget to remove the radio pod first before you undo the dash from the body (2 10mm screws on the dash, 1 10mm nut behind where the radio sits holding the pod to the floor bracket).
:edit: And I forgot that you will need to either remove the harness from the dash assembly or cut the wires to the fuel pump sending unit on the hump between the rear seats (and replace with an inline connector, which I think I'm going to do when I get there) OR unplug the fuel pump unit under the car and drill out the rivets holding the connector assembly to the body as there is no way to disconnect the dash harness from the wiring to the sending unit, it's all one piece.

How will I be able to remove the connector from the inside? Not sure what it's called but it's the one for the engine harness that comes in the passenger side that plugs to the ECM.

I'm trying to find an answer to this too, I don't want to have to take the fender off just to get to the wire harness connectors....sigh....

pretty sure its just a clip that slides around it just like the brake flex lines on the fronts that attach to the strut. Same style clip im sure of it but bigger obviously. Been awhile since I took one apart

Re: installing new wiring harness, and taking dash apart.
... And then the whole engine harness gets pulled out of the hole in the passenger's side. The pass-through doesn't fit through that hole, trust me (I, if it was done up, could swap a 730 harness in place of my factory harness in 45 minutes including repinning the connector under the dash). The C100 gets angled to be pulled out the hole (which is why it's split in half).

Heres what it looks like when the factory puts it in. from an 87 GTA 5 speed.

Wow what a mess. Luckily I don't need the dash all the way out. Just got the harness out last night

Re: installing new wiring harness, and taking dash apart.
I know this is an old thread but I am trying to take my dash completely out.
I have a 1991 gta and my dash is riveted to the upper portion of the dash.
So I'm not sure which way I can get my dash out and leave the wiring harness in the car.

Dash isn't riveted to the body. Read the comments above. They're pretty helpful

It comes out as a whole piece. Unless you wanted to take the time to drill the rivets and separate the whole thing. No reason to do that tho.

Re: installing new wiring harness, and taking dash apart.
The riveted lower piece is just the metal frame they added around drivers area to make it strong enough that the dash would shatter and blow the drivers hush panel through your crotch when the airbag deploys. It's still basically the same dash setup, you have to pull the while thing as one.

Is there any reason you can't drive the car with the dash out. I don't know enough about electrical and I don't want to pay my auto electrician to remove it, so I thought I would pull the dash, drive it to him to chase down the gremlins and then put it back when he is done...

Re: installing new wiring harness, and taking dash apart.
You have a mechanic who would actually do that? Wow, I would never step into the middle of a job like that.
I think you should just tow it over as is and let him fix it . Pay him and say thanks for the finished car.
