35 or 50 percent windshield tint

hey guys.....

i was wondering which would you do if it was your car... 50 percent or 35 percent windshield tint.... this isnt my daily driver and my interior is all black... im not worried about passing inspection because i know several guys who will pass me.... i want to keep it dark looking inside and keep the uv rays off my interior... currently i have 20 percent side windows and 5 percent back hatch....

I don't think you can tint the front windshield a tenth of a percent let alone 50 percent.

You can't legally tint the windshield, however, many people do it. My only problem is that no matter what tint you put on, the tint does cause a slight distortion when looking through the windows. I would not want that distortion in front of me while driving!

Re: 35 or 50 percent windshield tint

You can't legally tint an entire windshield but (here in TX) I know you can do the 5" eyebrow, no lower. Considering how sloped our windshields are, that doesn't do much for us though.

For visibility, do 35% over the entire front windshield and 2% everywhere else. Looks amazing.

You say "for visibility" then suggest "2% everywhere else".....You ever driven a car at night with tint like that? When I was like 18/19 I thought that would be cool too & did "Limo tint" (2%/5%/whatever it was) and that royally sucked when it came time to turn a street corner at night. I had to STOP, roll down the windows to see left & right because anything other than headlights (pedestrians/dogs/anything not with lights) was "invisible".

I wouldn't suggest doing darker than 20% for a street driven car, on the door glass.

Re: 35 or 50 percent windshield tint

^ is that even legal?!, i dont think you can tint the whole windsheild, i had mine brought down past the rearview mirror and its perfect, i can be driving and when the suns right around that area the tint brings the brightness down to where i dont even need my visors, its very tolerable

I know here in NJ it's illegal to tint the drivers and passenger door windows let alone a windshield.

Isn't Llumar's 'Air Blue' 50 state legal? It isn't dark, doesn't distort, but supposedly blocks out 99% of UV and nearly 50% of solar energy.

I would never tint a windshield, but if you must i would not go darker than 50, 35 IMO is not dark on side and back glass, but too much for a whole windshield.

Re: 35 or 50 percent windshield tint

Speaking as someone also in NC I would definitely NOT tint the windshield and also warn you to be careful when getting your windows tinted in this state. When I had my inspection done back in February my inspector warned me that the DMV was cracking down hard on cars with darker than legal tint (35%) and the inspection stations that were passing them. It was a $250 fine for the car and the shop that passed it with the possibility of the shop losing it's license. One of our "wonderful" governor's pet projects, to crack down on inspection stations doing exactly what you stated in your post...passing cars that shouldn't pass. Just passing it along...

Re: 35 or 50 percent windshield tint

lol well my whole engine is technically "illegal" i have no smog pump or anything on it.. but i do not drive it everyday and i know several people who can pass me.... i have 20 percent tints on my windows now and black out tail lights and the police officers do not bother me at all... but now that i think of it there is a slight disortion in all my window tints and i think that would bother me a little bit.... so i think i will pass on getting the front windshield tinted

Re: 35 or 50 percent windshield tint

Ridiculously stupid to tint a windshield. If you are worried about your interior fading, then park in the shade. If the sides are tinted just use a windshield sunshield/blocker/screen when parked and wear sunglasses when driving. Anyone know if a dragstrip or Autocross event would allow that? Is it considered a moving violation there? If you cause an accident and your insurer or officer noticed that, no way would they pay out to you.

i did 35 all the way down, with a 5% strip that comes half way down, and 5% on the side and back. i haven't had any visibility/drive-ability problems and i'm daily driving.

Re: 35 or 50 percent windshield tint

Man, I *hate* windshield tint. But that's probably only because I have to put window stickers and buyer's guides in all our cars at work. Kinda sucks when all the windows have tint, there's nowhere to put the stickers without having to pull the tint off of wherever I end up putting them. Just put them on the side of a 98 C5 that must have 5% tint, you can't even tell there's a window sticker or buyer's guide in it because it's so dark, but it's much easier having to re-tint the side windows than it is the windshield.

Re: 35 or 50 percent windshield tint

I had 50% on my windshield on my truck and it was AWESOME!!! Totally illegal, but cut the glare, no distortion, and kept the interior much cooler. I plan on tinting the windshield in my Camaro as well.

Can see how dark it actually is... 5% on the rest of the windows.

Re: 35 or 50 percent windshield tint

I've driven a few cars with tinted windshields, I always find myself rubbing my eyes because everything just doesn't look right. To me it's a bit distracting. I have 20% tit all around but I think I would pass on the windshield.

Re: 35 or 50 percent windshield tint

i was told by my eye doctor that i could tint my front windshield legally here in MD, all he has to do is write me a note/prescription, whatever he needed to do, this was back when i was 16/17 when i first got my camaro, so memory does not serve me well, just remember it was because im one step away from being legally blind, and apparently having blue eyes means the sun hurts them more

that being said, i would probably only go at about 50%, and to those members who do not know much about tint, the lower the percentage, the darker the tint!

Yep. I had a cornea transplant back in 1992 & that is how I got my Exemption. Took the Dr. letter to Texas DPS & got a letter from DPS so that I'm exempt yet somehow it got turned into partially exempt.

I still can't tint the windshield if I wanted to nor can I do a windshield eyebrow below the AS-1 line. I have been down at DPS talking to the head guy that hands out the exemptions & he doesn't understand how the Exemption got turned into only a partial either. He only hands out the Exemption letters, he doesn't write the law.

Re: 35 or 50 percent windshield tint

My windshield is 50% and I have the factory blue tinted band plus a 35% tint band up top and it looks awesome. Dont have any problem with visibility and I drive mine everyday (no problems w/ po po either) . I had mine done when I bought the new 1, just before I put it in. Its tinted all the way to the black part so you cant really tell. The rest of my windows aint tinted yet, but imma do 35 or 25% on side windows and probably 5% on the hatch.
