Button on center console?

Engine: 305 h.o in the z28 & 350-RS
Transmission: t5 & 700r4-RS
Axle/Gears: 7.5 10 bolt posi 3.73 & 4.10 RS
Button on center console?
I have an 84 z28 h.o with the 5 speed and there is this spring loaded button on center console between the window switches. I just bought the car and I'm wondering what it does. I'm sure its something silly and this is a "noob" question.

Thanks, the hydraulics that hold up the hatch are worn out so that could be.

When you push the switch back you should hear a relay click from the rear hatch. If you don't hear anything, welcome along the non working rear hatch boat.
