I bought an 84 camaro with no keys

I was wondering if there was a way to look up the key cut code from the vin number because I went to a chevy dealership but they said the car was too old to get a code for, and I dont want to pay 80 dollars for a locksmith to come make one any ideas?

Check your chain auto part stores for 'loaners'. As an example, I left a $10 deposit to borrow a steering wheel puller from VIP parts. When I was done, it was returned, as was my deposit.

AZ and all the others will rent the wheel puller and lockplate remover for a deposit only. Tighten up your steering column while you're in there, you know it's loose.

Well everyone else said what I was going to say, save and rent the puller from the parts store. I'm guessing if there's no key you have no idea if it runs good or not?

How do you not have $65 after buying what is clearly a project car? I'm sorry, but that sounds like a completely stupid idea no matter what kind of car it is. Just do it right and stop trying to rig your car or you'll find out you're going to pay for more parts you've broken in the process.

Re: I bought an 84 camaro with no keys

I found a puller cheep at O'reilly's Auto parts.Should be the same at most parts stores =
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/se...g+wheel+puller
Here's one at Auto Zone = http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...ier=555516_0_0_
I was a little intimated when I needed to go deep into a bag less column because of the schematic I was looking at.Talk about allot of small parts. After doing it once the second time was a breeze.
Make sure to have the wheels perfectly straight and the steering wheel going back on is lined up perfectly when you put it back on. It is possible to put the wheel on a little **** eyed.I know first hand.
Any time you use a professional mechanic or some one in a trade like a lock smith you are paying for at least one hour of there time and expertise especially if the lock smith has to come out to your car ,going rate is $100.00 a hour around here.
#1 through #19 shows you the order the column pieces will be removed in order to get to the lock cylinder while doing the install.#12 just moves to the side. do not pull the wire harness out of the column.I say give it a try and learn as you go but $80.00 to a lock smith may be looking pretty good right about now.
