1987 Base Firebird Door Panels

I'm in hopes of someone pointing me in the right direction that I have had no success. I am trying to restore my '87 Firebird. Already successful with engine and tranny. Now working on interior. Have tried Year One, JC Whitney, Google, eBay, etc. and still unable to find replacements for the door panels. Any help would be much appreciated.

Covergirl can do anything interior . I've seen her work and it's better than factory. Reasonable too.

Re: 1987 Base Firebird Door Panels

Just FYI, those are the deluxe door panels. I have the same ones in my car, exactly. I don't think anybody makes reproductions of them.

Sounds like about as good a time as any for somebody to start making these. Maybe cover girl could get the ball rolling on this?

Re: 1987 Base Firebird Door Panels

I fixed mine, sorry 'bout the small picture

I just replaced the insert and used a "Pontiac" from the hood of a '77 Bonneville.

This car, unfortunately, is no longer with us.

Still got the panels, future use for another car perhaps.

Can send you more detailed pictures of how I did this to them.

Re: 1987 Base Firebird Door Panels

I'm in a similar situation. My driver side panel has sperated at the front seam where the pallex has been press molded. Its only an inch or two, but enough to be noticeable. On top of that, its in camel and pallex is rarer than winning the lotto. I want to keep the panel, as 95% of the rest of the car is original, but not sure what to do to repair and keep the factory look. I'll keep an eye on the thread to see if anyone comes up with something.

I had the separation in the seam.
i made a panel that goes on top of the door panel
Padded it, covered it and added a PONTIAC from a 77 Bonneville's hood.

I will take more detailed pics this weekend and post them.

Re: 1987 Base Firebird Door Panels

I had a conversation via PM with thecovergirl a couple months ago about this. IIRC, she hasn't done a Deluxe panel yet. I'd send her mine as a test pair (driver's side cloth is coming off bad around the latch handle trim), but I haven't gotten any material samples yet. I'll have to shoot her another PM, I suppose.

And no, there aren't any reproductions. And Classic and those places don't seem interested in making any (even though there were a lot more 3rd gens with these panels than there were 10th Anniversary T/A's with the special interior that they DO sell... Go figure).

Re: 1987 Base Firebird Door Panels

Wish I knew how to redo the panels myself. I could probably stay pretty busy with other 'deluxe' door panels.

A while ago, Hawks made a thread to gauge interest in reproductions of them, but few people responded.

Re: 1987 Base Firebird Door Panels

No I have not done the deluxe panels before. If I could find a pair at any of our local junkyards, I would buy them and see what I could do, but finding a pair of those is going to be a lucky find. I have not seen any in the junkyards.

TGR has a set in stock right now, grey. Kind of pricey, but so hard to find in good shape. Hope this helps someone!

If only the cloth was the correct tan color like mine are. I don't have the pockets either.

Also missing the screw covers behind the door handles (on the lock bezels), but since they have little Birds molded into them, I don't think you'll miss them much.

Wish mine looked like that... Finally got the VATS key code figured out only to find there is a wiring error in my starter disable circuit (aftermarket 2-way security). And still need to find a way to make a new pass side air bag cover after I get the ECM figured out. Looks good, though.

Anyone know a good place to find the plastic fasteners?

Your local Auto Paint supplier should stock them.
