Okay so I have a major problem with my car it's really not a major problem right yet but will be when there is a running motor back in it. My ignition is always unlocked and can be in all positions regardless of if there is a key in it or not. It can be off, running, and starting positions without a key. What is the problem and how can it be fixed?

 

There is either a problem with your ignition cylinder(worn out) isn't engaging the lock mechanism, or it is possible something is broken in the pieces that engage the lock plate.
Either way you will have to remove the steering wheel, then the problem will probably present itself. In any case, it shouldn't be a big deal to fix.

 

Okay I'll look after the motor is swapped in. What kind of broken stuff would I be looking for in the steering colum?

 

The lock cylinder is most likely the problem it should lock no matter whats wrong in the column. Zane is right, you will have to pull the wheel, ten there is a black torx screw that holds the cylinder in. Auto Zone rents pullers for nothing. Just a deposit then returned when you return the tool as you got it. DO NOT TRY TO USE A HAMMER!! You will booger up the threads on the shaft and cause more problems.

 

Try getting some lube from a hobby shop or something... Could just be the tumblers inside are frozen in place for whatever reason.
