SeatBelt upgrade - 84-92 seatbelts in a 82-83 fbody

So i have an 82 bird am trying to upgrade the seatbelts to 84-92 style with the dual retractors and no fugly buckle hanging half way down. On my 82 the seatbelts do not bolt down into the floor but rather right on the door sill where it meets the floor. So the seatbelt bolt screws in horizontally into the door sill. The 84-92 seatbelts that i have aquaired appear to bolt into the floor vertically. Can someone post up a picture of how this mount appears on the floor please? It appears i will have to make some kind of bracket/mount in order to do this upgrade but i would like a better idea of how it should be.

I think you missed the part where i said...
no fugly buckle hanging half way down
The 4th gen belts are out of the question BUT i saw this in the 4th gen seatbelt upgrade tech article...
I then remembered that the bracket the stock retractor bolts too is bolted into the car.
So this sounds like 84-92 fbody front seatbelts mount to a bracket on the floor that is removable. This is the kind of information i was looking for and why i asked for pics. So if this is correct i should be able to go to a junk yard and get some brackets for my upgrade rather then making some.

I don't know when i will be able to get by a junk yard to look at a car and maybe score some brackets so if someone can elaborate or post some pics i would greatly appreciate it.

Re: SeatBelt upgrade ?

Ok i got this figured out finally. So it turns out that the 84-92 fbodies have a bracket that bolts to the same bolt hole that 82-83 seatbelt bolts to. It is an upside down L shaped bracket that screws into the same bolt hole as in an 82-83 AND has a 10mm screw in it as well which appears to keep the bracket from moving on the bolt.

You said you have some kind of "fugly" buckle hanging halfway down with your original belts. Is it the buckle for the lap/shoulder belt for the front seats? A pic might help me understand, because I don't recall any on my car...maybe 'birds are different in '82-'83 because I have dual retractors on my '83 Camaro.

Unfortunately i have no pics right now but yea my front belts had the single retractor in the roof with an ugly buckle hanging down. The buckle i speak of can slide up and down the seatbelt and usually hung on the belt right where the seatbelt loop is on the seat causing that part of the seatbelt to wear out and fray.

It sounds to me like your belts have been upgraded already or maybe it was a 'late' 83 and came with the newer belt design 'two retractors'.

Anyway i solved my problem by finding the brackets that hold the floor retractor to the seatbelt bolt in the floorboard from a 1985 firebird.

Glad you figured it out! Sounds like only one of the two retracted on yours. Just the shoulder belt part or lap part of it retracted? My bet is that it was an '82 only thing.

EDIT: Take a look at post #29 on this thread:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...-interior.html
Did your lap belt mount the same way?
